Should RTE now take The Angelus off air and replace it or just scrap it

Leave it. It's 60 seconds of reflection/meditation/prayer. Use it from your own perspective. They don't use any religious imagery anymore either. They show people stopping whatever they are doing to pause for thought.

But the sound is the religious part of it

Could they change that part to say a wave crashing on a rock or some birds singing

Or could they put in the muslim call to prayer every now and then

Just thoughts

Exactly this. Its a moment of reflection in the day. I find the bells quite grounding

Considering the uproar the comedy sketch about god on the new years caused could you imagine what would happen if they got rid of it?

We aren't religious at all but better to keep it then listening or seeing the whingeing getting rid of it would cause.

The only difference taking the Angelus off the air would make, is that the 6:01 News, would become the 6 o'clock News. And I get all my news through Simpsons memes on Facebook, so it makes no difference to me.

Leave it on, it does no harm, and auld wans seem to think it's very important.

Are we seriously going there after the latest revalations regarding the mother and baby homes?? I think the influence the Catholic Church has had over many things including your 'state' broadcaster should be abolished.

Time that bullsh#t was scrapped.

How can you use it for reflection when every time you hear it, it gives you the shivers? I'd imagine for many it's the daily reminder of church imposed fear and oppression or even worse the abuse you've experienced through the hand of the catholic church. Ireland calls itself a secular country and despite all the unbelievable crimes that happened in so many catholic institutions, the influence of the church is still strongly present and its semi state run broadcaster is clutching onto this religious relict.

I think its time to get rid of it, reinvent 60 seconds of reflection with something contemporary (21st century) and all inclusive (non denominational).

Seemingly an unpopular view but anyways...

Ditch it. Any step, small or large, to make the country more secular is a good thing.

People can stop for a minute at 5.59 to pray, meditate, or do what they like for a minute if it's that important to them.

It's also up to people, if they don't believe in god, to grow a pair and stop christening their kids and getting married in churches just because they might disappoint or offend other family members or friends, or because it's the "done thing".

With situations like this I always go with don't throw baby with bath water.

People have reservations and animosity towards the church and rightly so

BUT if you strip away the religion from the angelus it's just the sound of bells, that's it, do with the moment listening to it what you will, take a moment to pray, self reflect, meditate, turn it off or change the channel.

Agree 100%.

And people need to know they have to stop ticking bloody “Catholic” on the census form. If they ticked ANYTHING else, the government wouldn’t have to to keep bloody supporting them. For all the outcry about these issues, 80% or more people still tick the box. STUUUUUPID.

"thats what you get in catholic ireland the angelus and then look at the mother and babies homes..its very sad..holy catholic ireland.. if ever there was a time to get rid of it, it's now"

Why??? Why should we get rid of it..?

The Angelus and it's true meaning and purpose should not be blamed or sacrificed just because of the shameful, anti Christian actions of a few horrible, despicable nuns, priests, bishops AND.., (let me emphasise that again).. AND the similiar practices of elected TDs from that period AND...parents of those unfortunate women, all of whom colluded to banish them to those hellish places...!

The Catholic church as an institution has a hell of a lot to answer for because of its warped views on sex and sexuality, however the core message of the gospels and the Angelus should not be punished and sacrificed because of the perverted practices of the institution's hierarchy...

The Angelus is a beautiful reflective prayer or it can be simply a reminder to take a minute out of one's busy day to pause a little.. No harm in that in today's mad world, huh?

Band wagon jumping during this painful time does not help anyone...

Yes, I am Catholic and proud to be... I'm not a very good one, mind but respect those who continue to find happiness in their faith.
