Tv tech question

Hi all.So I've a tech question,my uncle doesn't have a smart TV but it does have a USB connection. He wants to be able to watch netflix and amazon prime. The now tv sticks dont allow amazon prime. He doesn't want to get a new tv despite me trying to explain the smarttv advantages.

What options do I have,it needs to be simple enough for him to operate.I was thinking a firestick but the amazon ones appear to be geolocked.remember it needs to be easy to work for him as he isn't a techie.

Thanks

Saucy.

Google have a new generation Chromecast out with Google tele. Looks sweet. Its about 75e.

The previous generation Chromecast will still need a device to stream from (smartphone, tablet).

I got the Amazon Firestick 4k and its great. Its an android OS device and Amazon Prime and Netflix and pre installed along with other apps. It is geo locked but unless you want something specific like BBC I don't think you need to go down that road. If you set it up, give your uncle some guidance then it is easy to use. Amazon will have them reduced for blackfriday/cybermonday so wait for that. They could be already discontinued. Get the 4k one as its future proofed.

Use Parcel Motel or the An Post Address Pal. They are much better devices than Roku.

Specific apps are Geo locked....the Firestick is not. For example, I want to download BBC Player. It is not listed for download because my IP is Irish.

But I am using Netflix, Prime, and lots of other apps.

Argos have them reduced at the minute. Not the 4K ones just standard ones. Starting at €25

You use the smart phone as the remote.

My dad is mid 80's ...bought him a cheap android phone,a chromecast and set him up on my netflix,Disney and Amazon accounts

I also set up the phone so he can download films

My mum goes to bed everynight at 10 and he stays up till 1 with a glass of whiskey

He never watched boxsets before and now rings me all the time giving me a list of good ones

They're easy to use

Yeah the only difference I can tell between the lite one and the next one up is that the lite one doesn’t have a volume control, but you can still use your tv remote for that.

I still don’t think prime works so I wouldn’t bother with it. You can get Netflix and side load apps for watching other movies and tv shows.

We have several firesticks. They work great. Disney+, Prime, Netflix, rteplayer and we watch regular irish tv through them using ibox. Great devices. Cheap and Rick solid reliable.. and you dont need a phone app to use it. The version of primevideo that's included doesnt work in ireland, but you can sideload a version that does.

So you can sideload a version on a firestick that does work on it? My uncle is obsessed with nature programmes and amazon prime has some and Netflix. He doesn't wanna pay for disney+ net geo if he can get enough on the netflix and prime apps. The lite firestick seems to be the value for 25 euro.

Actually in the process of setting up a 4k firestick for my dad with an easy enout to use IP TV service on it. I 3 firesticks in the house with Netflix IPTV C4 prime on them.

Firesticks are not geo locked and you can buy them in Ireland. €59 for the 4k model in Currys. Don't get the cheapest versions as the processing power is lower and it will struggle with some apps.

If you want to set up a VPN to use iPlayer etc it's really easy to do. I've got chromecasts here but to be honest the firestick 4k is unbeatable in that price range for simple functionality

If you use Parcel Motel you can get the Firestick 4k, I got my Mam one for Christmas last year and she loves it. Unfortunately you can't get Prime Video on it (as far as I know, might be a way around it) but you can get Netflix, Disney+, Titanium, etc. Or just get your uncle a dodgy box!

You CAN get prime video. If you use the aptoide appstore the version on there works on firesticks in ireland. Also you CAN get rteplayer too. Look for an apk for version 1.01. Works great

I havent seen the lite ons, but I have a mixture of 4k ones and regular ones bought via amazon and parcelmotel. They always discount them black friday/prime day so look ther for deals as you could grab a 4k model for a low price.

True.. but it's an expensive bit of equipment to tie up when you can get something that does that does a great job for 30euro, is hidden nicely behind your tv, and includes a remote control.

It has a HDMI port also, if I get the ones off amazon and them via parcel motel as I gather they don't deliver smart sticks to ireland, will the netflix and amazon prime work, as in is the stick not geolocked? Some forums say it is.

The stick is not geolocked. An application can be geo restricted. Such as BBC iplayer. I have a 4k firestick....Filty has a collection of sticks and we are in Ireland. Think of the firestick like an android smartphone. It runs a version of the android operating system and you install apps on it. Just like your phone. The same as an android phone that is being used in Ireland, you will not be able to download/watch geo restricted apps on your phone. I am currently watching Umbrella Academy on Netflix that was pre installed on my firestick with not a problem.

The STOCK prime app that comes with your stick will not work. Netflix will. You need to install a different version of the prime app for it to work here in Ireland.

Seriously just get a Chromecast. If he has a smart phone or a tablet or a laptop running Chrome, he can cast any app from that to his TV.

If he doesn't or that's too complicated, the new Chromecast has Google TV which basically includes access to apps available in the Google Play app store, including Amazon Prime. It also has a remote.

It's not region locked, you can order online direct from the Google store, will be delivered in about two days.

Check out what's available on the Google TV service at https://tv.google/

The stock app will work, you don't need to use an old version or side load and app. I've set up 3 if them in the last week for friends and family. As long as you have prime membership you are good to go. For the average user there is no need to side load apps or IPTV platforms

Theres brilliant app to put on your android phone apps2fire that you can send apps from phone directly onto firestick.. sideloading made very easy for tv compatible apps.. keep mentioning good apps peeps..

Kodi is fantastic for searching and running anything you cant find elsewhere.. even new Cinema releases... even though f all films made these days. World wide search with no geolocks and free... never gives any issues

loaded with team "Titanium" which loads everything for you...
