Anybody else notice the price of second hand cars is really expensive?

For example a 2012 golf with 150k miles on the clock for 7.5 k euro.. Imo crazy for an 8 year old car with that miles..

I'm not sure but wasn't there an increase in VRT in the budget? That would lead to 2nd hand cars value increasing. I presume the Golf you mention was diesel, if petrol then surely overvalued.

I picked up a 152 open insignia with 130k miles on the clock for 6000 at the start of the lockdown.

A 1.6 diesel.. Too expensive better off buying in England or out of the north then pay the vrt than pay that money would still save a few thousand easily

Your in Louth so look up usedcars.ni

You will save yourself a couple of grand with vrt cleaned and all. I bought my last 2 cars up there much better choice and spec of used cars, but be quick as vrt is being increased massively in January from the budget just gone which is going to make it more expensive than buying in the south then

Dublin/Drogheda

Be careful buying up north or uk, all car before 2016 have to pay a nox tax as well as vrt so depending on the car the nox can be an extra 2500/3000 on some diesels which doesn't make it worthwhile anymore so check the nox tax before you buy.

We get ripped off in Ireland when it comes to cars and car insurance. The Polish guys I work with cant believe the lack of choice here and the fact that theres so many brand new cars being bought that are absolutely bog standard. Only two years ago one guys wife bought a new car that only had electric windows in the front. What we pay for big standard is more than what alot of Europeans are paying for cars with all the extras.

So true.... the spec on imports is always way ahead of what you’ll get here.

Want the 4th wheel? Doesn’t come on the basic model and will be €2k extra

Well brand new cars are maybe little rip off but second hand cars in Ireland and UK are definitely one of the cheapest in Europe

All cars have nox tax added, it's just lower on newer cars.

That's expensive OP, im just reading through the threads and i never knew cars are that expensive in Ireland. I wanted a golf, but i could not find a good car in my price bracket.

So i brought a Skoda, much cheaper on car price, insurance and it has a golf engine 1.9tdi. I brought it for £2000 with 80,000 on the clock, 3 years later i wouldn't change my car. Its brilliant.

That’s not just the engine that’s identical. They’re built on the same platform. It’s basically the same car with different clothes on.

Agreed. You can be limited in mileage though and you are to have another "main" car, so buy a terribly cheap car too. Overall you get to drive a fantastic car for far less than you would imagine.

There is some UK car purchase limit to bring ROI per year.

He sensed that it is a good deal!

Please can you provide me with the web to verify the cost of the nox and vtr.

Thanks

Me dad has an 1998 escort thats just liyin there he can't drive so he said if I wanted it it's there for me. but its an absolutely bullet proof car lovely ta drive just needs some light repairs. But are you limited on millage on classics when comes too insurance? Me uncle said it too me do the classic insurance job but I'm not sure if there's a catch on it of not as I'd be up an down too Dublin often especially now with a family member sick.

Your limited to between 8000 and 16000kms per year, and you must be over 25. The higher on the millage limit you want to be the more expensive your insurance will be so it all depends on how much millage you are going to be clocking up per year

We went through a few years where there was low new car sales. This has a knock on effect of less 2nd hand cars from those years and supply and demand pushes the price up
