It's really sad. My dad was down in dingle fishing a few weeks ago (against regulations cos he knows better apparently). He goes down with his mates every year for 2 weeks. There's this little beach they go to, and there's a house right above it. Every year when they're down there, a woman comes out of the house around dusk, swims out into the water and starts slapping the water really hard. And every time, fungi appears and swims around her. He said this was the first year in 10+ that the woman kept swimming out but there was no sign.

Was just reading he's been here since 1983 but no one knows how old he is. The article also said that the oldest dolphin recorded was 68 so who knows?

Hopefully he has a few years left in him yet

Amazing that over the years they never tagged him so he could be traced when something like this happens. Hoping he comes back.

When Kaizer was but a young whippersnapper, the family Thunderkiss headed south on an exciting holiday adventure.

The highlight of course was going to see Fungie the Dolphin. We set off from the Killarney Ryan Hotel (back then every hotel was a Ryan Hotel).

When we got to Dingle, Papa Thunderkiss said he would arrange our voyage to meet this famous mammal.

Unfortunately all the chartered trips were booked out so ever the genius Papa approached a local fisherman, who for a fraction of the cost would bring the family TK to a personal meeting with Fungie.

This was a foolproof plan as the only difference was those chumps on their ships had to wear uncomfortable inconvenient life jackets.... Not us!

Anywho we blazed across the bay at a whopping 2 knots per hour. Poor Mama TK projectile vomiting into the h'Atlantic as well bounced up and down. Papa didn't care he was after saving a few quid.

We came to a halt, the boatman stood up and let out this squawk type noise. Suddenly Fungie leaped out of the water and started to splash and have the craic.

Staring at your hero, the young Manbeast got a wink off the dolphin who then squeaked "shiver me timbers".

The boatmen threw Fungie some shrimp and began to tell us stories of memories past of he and Fungie having some wild nights, I'm particular the 1988 Rose of Tralee.

Said Rose fell in love with Fungie and went on to have 3 kids with the bottle nosed lothario!

Sorry. As far as I'm aware , they roughly live till 40 and on occasion to 60. Fungi is a household name in Ireland . At the end of the day it's a wild animal, if it doesn't return so be it. I'm sure the dolphin will live long in the memory of many an Irish person. Not me unfortunately. Don't get me wrong , I love all nature. I wonder if human interaction was an influence on a usually social animal to be almost solitary

Im a regular visitor to Dingle as its so close to where I live. Fungi has had a tremendous value to Dingle re visitors and local economy. Be very hard to replace that sort of income. Hopefully he will turn up but I think his age may well be against him

See its this is what gets on my goat about this story, nothing about the welfare of the animal, its all about how it will hurt Dingle and the loss of income to the area. They even got a sonar to search the harbor. When was the last time you heard sonar being used to search for ir a missing person? I'd say rescue 116

God bless you Tarzan!

Spending all those nights over the past 3 months, tossing and turning. Frantically wondering where our beloved aquatic brother has gone to.

While the rest of us selfishly lived our lives and enjoyed Christmas

There's a place for you in Dolphin heaven, you beautiful selfless human being

It's such a pity and a loss to the community in dingle and surrounding areas of Ireland. I remember going down to go out on a boat trip to see fungi, we seen him at the end which was better than not seeing him at all. It's a much more exciting and slightly more risky being in the water with them in the water.
