Hi guys,

All advice or help greatly appreciated.

Gas boiler (Baxi Solo 3, Model 80, Heat Output 23.4kW. 18 years old) has decided its time to die on me!

Looking at a replacement, hearing all kinds of mixed advice on makes / models etc.....

Anyone got any sound impartial advice?

Thanks.....

Gas boilers are obsolete these days, all new builds have air to water heat pumps fitted as we had fitted recently, pricy to fit but way cheaper to run

Thanks Stockings, but this is not a new build, its replacing an existing boiler.

Heat pumps are fine, but more suited to underfloor heating as it operates at a lower temperature. Ideal for new builds, but not retrofits.

There are lots on the market at the moment. Go for one that is fitted by a registered engineer and make sure to register yor warrenty with which ever company you buy it from. After 20 odd years I still find Pottertons are best value and very little goes wrong with them.

I have an Ideal not sure what number model it is but bought new few years ago always heats the place up nicely has an A+ rating so it's very efficient.. Bills are between 50-60 every 2 months in the depths of winter so it's affordable.. I paid around 1000 for mine so not cheap either

Worcester Bosch or viessman is what you want. A little more expensive but worth it in the long run.

Whatever you end up with will be miles better than what you had.

If you upgrade to a number of zones then you can get a grant to help with the cost.

8000 plus. It's not suitable for an old house, but works for well insulated new builds. Noisy yokes and come with a couple of other disadvantages too.

Thanks all.....

Bought the Worcester Bosch (30kW).

System flush and install for a €1000 (cash), does that sound reasonable?

€1000 for a day's work. give gashouse or gasworks a ring, both do work for us and can't fault them. That's crazy quote for fitting a boiler. Mag filter is a 15 min job to fit and unless it's a power flush them the plumber is ripping the piss

I'm surprised people still fall for the "cash job" scam. This guy is Charing twice what he should and it makes no difference what way he gets paid, cash cheque bitcoin or kinder eggs. If you think you are getting done by a small job tradesman then go with a national fully insured company who will stand over their work. My heart is broken with calls from friends who can't get plumbers or sparks back after cash jobs

Agree, if there's gas and electricity involved only go with fully certified tradesman or you might pay a high price in hindsight. You don't do yourself a favour with a cash deal.

I love very much the fact that Fab can also be a place to discuss the merits of differnt boilers. I must expect Irish Fab to be the only place.

I'm sure you'll find a few old boilers in the lounge too
