Covid 19 measures continued

We can have a discussion debate no problem with differing views. It's what forums are about.

the amount of frustration in my club tonight and on social media outlets is unreal. The main gripe with people Is they're targeting sporting outlets with no root to the cause and the biggest cause of clusters, meat plant factories go undetected. Beaches are still packed, playgrounds. Pubs can open until 11.30 and you can have your food and pints all u want. I see in MM speech hes targeting young people and house parties once more and said gardai have extra power to police these. I'd like to see how they're going to do that.

Whether we agree or not with the new measures that the government has announced. The very fact that they didn't even mention the food industry and direct provision cases brings their credibility into question as far as im concerned.

Have been at a lot of underage matches the last few weeks. They were well organised even down to each team supporter parking same area. Parents and children all practised SD and as soon as games over left.

Can't see how any of tonight's measures will actually target the people that are the problem.

Proper travel restrictions need to be put in place.

I am not a fan of this Government but I did clearly hear the Minister for Health mention the meat factories and direct provision centers, he said all were to be tested along with nursing homes on the press briefing.

I'm not arguing with you but none of that is preventative. It's all reacting after the fact. I know they can't close the factories but they can do something about the conditions that these people are living in which helps it spread like wildfire.

I was watching Prime Time tonight and I thought that stephen donnelly got away too softly. Where were the real tough questions? Public confidence is shattered with the latest tripe re matches and training whilst d restaurants are full to the brim and d factories are full of covid clusters. It's mind boggling.

The issue i'm having is what's the endgame? Are we trying to reach zero cases or just live with this? Frankly I can't see how living with it is going to be an option as we'll just be repeatedly getting into the situation we are in at the moment.

I would be all for three weeks of pain with the goal of eliminating covid if at all possible. Curfew, everything but essentials shut, no house visits, parties socialising etc. and anyone that breaks these rules has the book thrown at them, fines in the hundreds/thousands if not sent to prison. I would also have everyone that comes into the country via plane or boat thrown into a government run facility guarded by the army at their own expense for two weeks. Tested on landing and tested again after two weeks.

Naturally this would need buy in from the North otherwise it would be pointless as people would sail or fly to the north and drive across the border.

All good points but the whole thing has been handled piecemeal

Usual blaming of young peeps having house parties... these have been going on for months before any spike.. easy target for the politicians to spout on

Barely any mention of meat factories and DP as both are shameful in the treatment of people and workers which looks terrible for the government and the real players in the economy

And we have people coming into the country all the time that dont have to isolate so its a complete fucking joke

Friend of mine flew back to South Korea.. mandatory 2 weeks in a government facility before getting into the rest of the country

I don't think there is a way of getting to zero cases without staying indoors all the time and just going out for essentias.

somewhere

The endgame has to be live with it as it is not going to disappear from Ireland anytime soon

The economy has been sacrificed to stop the hospitals from being overrun but the hospitals are not overrun now.

For the life of me I don't understand the outdoor v the indoor crowd rules they don't make sense

To be honest without getting too political the present minister for health and The Taoiseach are fuckin useless

At least with simon and leo we had some sort of sense to the message and the briefings

That's the point though. If the extremely harsh restriction were followed and/or enforced for a period of time then it could potentially be effectively eliminated from the island. Wouldn't that be preferable than repeatedly going in and out of a soft semi lockdown? It worked in New Zealand for a period. Time will tell if it does there again I suppose.

Zero cases is impossible unless mandatory 14 quarantine is enforced for everyone coming into the country

Even if we did as previous poster said and fully complied as a nation for 3 weeks which will never happen but imagine

All it takes is one person coming back from abroad and going to work in say a meat packing factory or some other hell hole where they give zero fucks about the workers and boom you have another cluster that spreads again

1000s coming in but don't worry wear a mask in your car it'll be grand

Its like taking all the precautions to keep your house safe from fire then letting in loads of kids that are mostly cool but you know 1 or 2 love a bit of arson

Agreed, forcing people into a government run facility that is properly guarded would be needed. Making incoming people pay for it themselves would help discourage selfish, ignorant arseholes from coming or from leaving in the first place.

True true and I know it all sounds a bit Orwellian but if we're going to do it then we have to do it properly

People see its done in a half arsed way and will only partially comply

That bullshit presser once again pointing out house parties that have been rocking from the beginning as the main culprit then talking to us as good girls and boys that have done so well but could we just do a bit better is patronising as Fook!!

Shut the fuck up with all this "we've answered Ireland's call in this together" shit when people are still coming in, DP, nursing homes and meat factories have been woefully ignored, neglected or purposefully forgotten about

Haha don't mean to rant but a 6 y/o could point out that gaping logical holes in the approach

It's a case of get serious or shut the fuck up and put Leo back in charge.

Lock down the country, green list or not, ya ain't coming in or going out. Unless you're food or goods thats been scanned, as apparently the NZ outbreak may be linked to cold storage food imports.

We have quite enough food production here to sustain ourselves, if we commit to local and curb our expectations for avocados.

3-4wks of that and proper precautions back again and we'd be in a much better place. Kids back to school in October, school holidays through the year halved to make up for it and businesses could reopen if it works. Keeping all our money locally spent, increase the well being of the local producers to help them recover.

Come on, who can't use Zoom/Teams for meetings and chat at this stage? No excuse for travel unless medically related.

It's time Michael Martin grew a pair!

I too have been to a load of underage matches in the last while and the weather was diplorable which ment the small stands at the venue's were jammers with people from both teams watching it ...the " social distancing " went totally out the window ...but one things for sure ..this Covid craic is here to stay ..it's just another " brick in the wall " to add to all the other types of flu's ...ailments etc etc that the world has come to know...

I don't think the measures go far enough. We need better enforcement of social distancing and face masks, and enhanced quarrentine. Giving exceptions to churches and watching live sports is gutless and pandering.

The meat factories need close monitoring, testing, and government sponsored sickpay.

The majority of cases in the meat plants and mushroom factory are asymptomatic. This is the reason why so few have been admitted to hospital so far. This is a good thing as shows the first time that a large cluster can be used to identify how much of a percentage are uneffected by this thing. Obviously they key factor here is the age of the workers is a lot younger than people in care homes.

Going by estimates from london last week and new york previously ireland has probably actually had around 300k cases. We have had 1700 deaths.

8 of that 1700 were under 65 didnt have underlying conditions that they know off.

Protect the vulnerable and the weak, let the rest get on with their lifes its absolutely nonsense at this stage.

It wouldn’t be that difficult actually. Outside of isolation. Constant testing and temperature checks.

The reason for outbreaks in care homes originated from lack of pup and guidance.

OK so no visitors for everyone in case homes going forward? What about older and immune suppressed or people with underlying conditions who live at home or with families?

And whats wrong with no visitors, if it works. The majority of older people have had enough, the dont want to go back to not seeing their grandkids, you only need listen to them yesterday on the radio.

With a bit of strategy and planning it could easily be managed but lets kick the can down the road.

Well I'm no doctor or anything clever but the main discussion seems to be around stopping/limiting the spread of c19.

As mentioned above here, some people are asymptomatic. If you don't feel unwell or have co concerns about who you've been withing 2 meters of, why would you get tested? So presumably it can't be known how many people are infected but asymptomatic.

So would it be an idea to test everyone, yip, the whole population (so not really going to happen) and look for things in common amongst the infected asymptomatic. Like, are they all vegan? Do they all have a glass of Guinness at lunchtime? Do they all eat raw garlic once a week? No idea, clutching at straws for sensible examples, but point being, might it not be a better approach for people to adapt to a virus rather than try to stop the spread of a virus in an age of mass travel? Otherwise we might make Cnutes of ourselves.

They just tested the entire population of Wuhan. 11m people over twice what we have.

The information is out there, a quick search and you will find it. A huge percentage of the Diamond Princess were asymptomatic(between 50 and 70%)

I just dont understand why governments are not taking this data seriously.

You might be onto something there

So instead of waiting for the government, couldn't people just club together, like 10 euros each, and commission a 'scientist' (whatever that means) to find out what the infected asymptomatic do/don't do/eat/don't eat etc that is different to the infected symptomatic? Then maybe we could just adapt our lifestyles for ourselves. Sounds like the shortest route from a to b.

So next step then, what exercise/dietary etc habits distinguished the asymptomatic from the symptomatic? There a several candidate vaccines that are already developed and are being tested on humans right now. The results are looking very positive. There is no reason to believe we won't have a vaccine that at the very least reduces symptoms to an acceptable level.

There's enough evidence that there's an association between vitamin D and the severity of covid-19 responses. The Scandinavian countries push a vitamin D supplement and vitamin D food fortification and they have lower infection rates and death rates. There's plenty of scientific research here just one from our on shores https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/05/200512134426.htm

I just dont understand why governments are not taking this data seriously.

This is not tinfoil had bs, they should be doing the research and making logical choices based on science.

But the government and pharma industry isn't interested in preventive measures , no money to be made.

As in a previous post of mine on a different thread – there is no one fits all solution. There are some extreme opinions out there – ranging from the extremes of a complete lockdown, restricting any and all movement, allowing the country to become a police state, and realistically speaking, taking away people’s basic human rights – to conspiracy theories with a New World Order!

And, in all fairness, who decides which life is more valuable than the next? Who decides which life is actually weak or vulnerable? There are plenty of people out there not considered “weak “ or “vulnerable” that have been suffering severely with mental health issues due to lockdown and social distancing (are these now not considered “weak” or “vulnerable”?), there are plenty out there suffering with massive financial losses and the huge economic impact on their and their familie’s lives (are they not vulnerable just because they don’t have a physical health condition or mental incapacity? – is this not the first step into becoming physically vulnerable?); and lo and behold there are plenty “weak” and “vulnerable” that are immunosuppressed or elderly that will tell anyone to their face that the guidelines and restrictions are farcical and too harsh for peoples and economies to “survive”! These are often, in fact, the elderly, who have lived a life, and seen a bit over the years, emotionally speaking, economically and politically speaking!

As for testing the entire population – it is a thought I had too. I also did not realise that it has been done in Wuhan. I doubt that Ireland has the resources or capacity to do this – but then, hey, they pulled out all the stops when this thing first started, so why not?!?

The harsh reality is that we will never get to 0% virus because there will always be some a**holes breaking guidelines and slipping the net – certainly not for any length of time – once the country is open to travel and foreigners after a lengthy lockdown to eliminate all virus, you’re back to square one unless you introduce a police state – no, thank you!!! Is that seriously what any of you want?!????? A police state?!? Until when? A vaccine, which has never been developed for a Corona virus before? Until the virus dies out?

In my opinion, the next wave, which I’m sure will hit us With the flu season is going to be horrendous – would it not have been better to get some amount of herd immunity through the spring and summer months?!? And done exactly as one of the posters mentioned – protect the “weak” and “vulnerable” as much as you – the individual – can, and with the help of government guidelines and institutions, with resources and with finances…it’s been the main focus in the discussions in my family – and I am surrounded by elderly and vulnerable, as well as health care workers, who do believe some of these measures too extreme!

I have a social conscience – I feel for everyone, not just the elderly and the immunosuppressed at risk – I feel for those with suicidal thoughts, as their families are breaking down, as their businesses are going under…but in my opinion, the downfall of entire world economies to protect the “vulnerable” to the extent that we did, is unrealistic and cruel to those that are, in fact, left behind having to fight for survival!

The world is a cruel place! Disease is a way of the world! As is evolution and natural selection…

With regard to the flu season, as Australia is among the first to suffer the annual infections due to it's winter currently at an end, the good news is that this season has had less impact there - probably as a result of the precautions being taken against the spread of coronavirus.

For infectious diseases, it's a lot about personal measures, not blaming governments. Keep your distance, wash your hands, practice good sneeze and cough etiquette and stay the fuck away from others if you are ill.

"There a several candidate vaccines that are already developed and are being tested on humans right now. The results are looking very positive. There is no reason to believe we won't have a vaccine that at the very least reduces symptoms to an acceptable level. "

Now the vaccine debate is another entire different can of worms! More and more poisons introduced into our systems, where we have no clue what the long term side effects are going to be. And all chemicals have side effects!!!

As a mother with a child on the spectrum (vaccinated!), as a daughter and granddaughter to a mother and grandmother that developed the same auto-immune condition after the flu vaccine, which, of course cannot be proven to be put down to the vaccine!

By all means, bring a vaccine to market, one that hopefully will help the weak and vulnerable - I for one, will fight tooth and nails, for my basic human rights not only to protect the health of my body and introduction of any chemicals into it but where the possibility of any "forced vaccine" or the possibility of restrictions of movement is going to be enforced!

It's not a can of worms. If it's gotten through the rigorous double blind testing then it's safe and it works. It's that simple. I have an ASD son also, and that's got fuckall to do with vaccines.

The vaccines have already been discovered. There are at least 5 that are fully developed and in testing. Unfortunately the testing rightfully needs a lot of time to ensure safety and effectiveness.

I think you can't force vaccinations... but you can strongly encourage by having them as a prerequisite for school entry.

If the parents say no.. The kids don't receive it.. Simples. A vaccine needs to be well tested though.. The Russian one is being pusdhed through so as to maintain national pride as much as anything. If its done properly and people see its having a beneficial effect without any serious side effects I think most people will get on board with it.

There needs to be strong encouragement. You can't just force anyone to get an injection.

This Russian vaccine is a risk. The have taken shortcuts with testing as it hasn't done the normal trials. It may well be perfectly safe and effective, but nobody knows for certain because its not been through the normal steps.

This is an exercise in Russia taking risks with its population in order to get the kudos of being first.

It's a shitty thing to do and undermines the confidence in properly tested vaccines.

The way I see it. There will probably be no cure. They can make to much money out of this. We live with the common Flu. And that continues to kill. At what point are we to be trusted to make our own choices. There will always be anti social behaviour. Whether it's crime, violence and anti establishment protests. But the majority of people I see are adhering to social distancing. It's the Covid19 brashers and media highlighting the negatives as usual.

I see this argument floating about, but who is "they" who make money from it? Definitly not the scientists working on a vaccine anyway!

Surely the same argument could be said for literally every single illness/disease that we have ever gotten a cure for.

I dont see makes covid any different that all of a sudden, this is the disease that we want to prevent a vaccine?

You said there won't be a cure because they can make too much money

Now you are saying there will be a cure because they can make money

Its one or the other

Do you expect the pharma companies to give away a vaccine if one is invented

I'd imagine it will be free to citizens and that governments will pay it

That's nonsense. Killing off your customer base is a terrible buisness strategy and makes no sense. If you die from covid, you're not going to live another X amount of years untill you die of old age, taking all sorts of medication and health care just to keep your vitals ticking over .

Also, the majority of people who are carrying out the research are not working in pharmaceutical companies. But mostly postdoctoral researchers working in universities.

"The way I see it.

"

I just dont understand why governments are not taking this data seriously.

This is not tinfoil had bs, they should be doing the research and making logical choices based on science.

But the government and pharma industry isn't interested in preventive measures , no money to be made.

And for those who wish Leo back, he's busy shopping Italian shoes accompanied with his PR crowd."

This is hilarious

Take vitamin D everyone and sure ye know, you’ll be graaaand!

“Enough evidence” - top science there

Flu is seasonal... this doesn't seem to be... plus it hasn't replace flu it will be in addition to it..

When we have this with a flu outbreak too its going to cripple the health service and the people working in it.

Can't say I agree with the majority adhering to it to be honest. Maybe the majority adhering to it the majority of the time.

"Its not perfect by any means but I can see rhe rationale behind most of the measures implemented.

There is no prefect approach to this.

Ideally everyone would social distance and keep themselves safe but that early won't ever happen.

"

I keep saying the same thing and from the beginning. You will never get everybody doing the one thing no matter how hard you try.

Well it kind of does make sense....

A graduation ceremony isn't vital.

Restarting education is hugely important.

It’s your talk about they and they making too much money from it that is off the wall nuts

And what does your latest reply even mean?

You’re saying out health system will be under too much pressure yet you’re saying people are obeying the rules too much?? That’s severely contradicting yourself

I don’t agree. Nothing is a necessity right now. It’s about balancing risks.

Some might say the risk is worth it and yet lots don’t think so. The majority of people have the main problem that the government can’t put a coherent and believable strategy in place

But the way the schools are being rushed in unprepared and the terrible mixed signals of the government with social distancing on o é hand and school crowds on the other is going to cause havoc.

As a parent you are legally obligated to send your child to school.

As a parent myself i can see massive impact on my child in relation to his social circle. Parents can educate children , but they are losing out on their social outlet and routines.

yes they're taking the measure until results come back but the ruling is you dont have to shut a whole club unless u have 4 or more confirmed cases. It's like a few clubs around shut, result came back negative after a couple of days and proceed as normal.

No they haven’t. They have only had a few weeks notice. As of about two/three weeks ago.

And furthermore it has all been left up to principals and boards of management to sort out the whole new system in the school with no direction from government.

They’ve to put out work to tender, contracts, with tradesmen on holidays. They’ve to be in consultation with families and interest groups and all sorts. Disingenuous of you to say 6 months. Six months ago was February and the schools were still operating as normal until late March. Then the had to do it be remote learning until the summer. After that they had to wait on direction from the government and board of education. And let me tell you, teachers were often finding out about new education measures at the same time as the public were - on TV.

If you want to have a go at anyone - direct it at the education minister and his team and the board of educations.

I completely agree it’s having a massive impact on children. Nowhere have I said there should be no one going back to school. What I did say however was that no one should be going back in the same settings as they were last year (when they were deemed unsafe and schools were shut)

The situation has too many unknowns and there is a high risk to spreading it through children to vulnerable people. This would be a perfect medium to disastrously spread the virus again.

If schools are to go back, there should have been much more leadership by government and the relevant authorities all over the summer. This worm was not the remit of individual schools and expecting them to take the lead and also the responsibility and potential future blame is a cop out on all sides

I don't think it makes a blind bit of difference what they do to manage kids in schools or to think that they can manage them. I just seen a picture of the local under 14 camogie team winning a County title at the weekend and the 25 of them on the pitch literally 3 deep on top of one another with the trophy trying to fit into the picture. You would think it was from another era and not last Sunday.

My point is that it doesn't matter, send them back to the schools and manage each case as it happens.

Children need their social outlets school is their main one. Yes , i agree that they should also be able to participate in their sports or other clubs.

If cases arise in schools or clubs. Local lockdowns could be put in place. We need to start returning to normal and live with this pandemic until there can be mass vaccinations.

This worm was not the remit of individual schools and expecting them to take the lead and also the responsibility and potential future blame is a cop out on all sides "

The facts are that teachers have done all they can to avoid any form of work in many of the schools around me and my work colleagues will all say the same regarding their experience.

Time they took some responsibility, showed some leadership and got back to work or else forfeited theit salary and let the thousands of young sub teachers who can't get work because of this lot come in get paid and get on with it.

Quite frankly I'm disgusted with teachers over this whole episode while they expect everyone else to get on with it. The ignorance they spout is laughable, these people are supposed to be educated and educate children. Lazy shower, it's obvious why the majority end up in teaching, for the hours and the holidays.

Hasnt released the genetic code?? What are you on about. Any Genomics lab in the world can just sequence the virus themselves and find the exact genetic make up.

You dont need a tinfoil hat, but perhaps a better education would help you from making a fool of yourself.

"Whether we agree or not with the new measures that the government has announced. The very fact that they didn't even mention the food industry and direct provision cases brings their credibility into question as far as im concerned."

This is the problem right here. There's a lack of serious intent about the whole approach to C19. That's why you get stopgap, half-arsed, futile measures like blaming it all on house parties and public transport and whatnot - instead of addressing big problems - the common travel zone with the UK, overcrowded workspaces full of exploited employees who live in crowded conditions, nursing homes etc.

This virus isn't going away until a reliable vaccine appears. We are just gonna have to put up with it in greater or lesser quantities of prevalence in society until that happens.

"The issue i'm having is what's the endgame?

"

This won't work. We aren't in the geographical position that New Zealand is in - so I think we have to just prepare to live with it until a vaccine comes.

"My daughters old primary school have cancelled 6th class graduation ceremony to adhere to the new rules.

Yet in a little over two weeks will open the whole school for the school year makes sense don't it as I was told letme its necessity. Opening the schools back after 6 months is a necessity, a grad mass is not.

I don’t agree. Nothing is a necessity right now. It’s about balancing risks.

Some might say the risk is worth it and yet lots don’t think so. The majority of people have the main problem that the government can’t put a coherent and believable strategy in place work and education would be classed as necessities.

Nothing trumps health tho unfortunately schools and the economy cannot stay shut forever.

I completely agree with you actually.

But the way the schools are being rushed in unprepared and the terrible mixed signals of the government with social distancing on o é hand and school crowds on the other is going to cause havoc.

If I was a parent I’d hold off sending in my child for a couple of weeks or anything up to a month to see what develops the schools have had months to prepare for this, longer then anybody. They should have some decent plan in place as they have to resume. If cases rise and are connected to school they will be shut again though.

Everybody in work has to get on with life with measures in place, the same applies with children in school with education.

So your logic is that if some group doesn’t obey rules right then fuck everyone else in on top of each other and to hell with consequences. That’s genius. Why didn’t we all think of that?

What I'm saying is there is widespread non social distancing. I said nothing about to hell with consequences. The simple fact is social distancing with children will not be managed effectively here (in China maybe).

Each school will have to be vigilant with cases that are guaranteed to occur. Test, trace, isolate.

Where did I say full classrooms???

I said they will not be able to manage the kids. My daughter has been working in a summer camp and no matter how hard they try, the kids are on top of each other any chance they can get.

Complacency will set in as it has with the general population.

So it's manage as best they can or reduce the numbers attending at any one time radically to maximise effect and minimise spread. This would in involve separate shifts and I'd like to see how that goes with the unions

This worm was not the remit of individual schools and expecting them to take the lead and also the responsibility and potential future blame is a cop out on all sides there will be nobody going back to school within the same settings as they left and anybody who didnt think schools were going to try return at the end of august is asleep at the wheel. Everybody in work has to get on with life with measures in place, the same applies with children in school with education.

Lee

So your logic is that if some group doesn’t obey rules right then fuck everyone else in on top of each other and to hell with consequences. That’s genius. Why didn’t we all think of that?

What I'm saying is there is widespread non social distancing. I said nothing about to hell with consequences. The simple fact is social distancing with children will not be managed effectively here (in China maybe).

Each school will have to be vigilant with cases that are guaranteed to occur. Test, trace, isolate.

So you’re saying social distancing can’t be done by children and yet you’re still saying send them all back in together in full classrooms? You’re contradicting yourself.

And it’s also coming to light the the test and trace system is in poor shape here.

You’re not going to see full classrooms operate here and it’s only a matter of time before this government effort will be rescinded. They’ll either close all schools very quickly again or they’ll have it so that it is donut between on site learning and distance/remote learning

This would in involve separate shifts and I'd like to see how that goes with the unions "

You're wasting your time.

You might as well bang your head off a wall. How are kids supposed to get it when some "adults" on here can't.

Hasnt released the genetic code?? What are you on about. Any Genomics lab in the world can just sequence the virus themselves and find the exact genetic make up.

You dont need a tinfoil hat, but perhaps a better education would help you from making a fool of yourself.

google giuseppe tritto he explains it better than i ever could..hes a renowned scientist..dont just dismiss it as conspiracy theory its not its the truth.."

I did Google him. I looked up his credentials on Google Scholar. He is a first named author on exactly 3 scientific papers. And his work research is on micro-surgery... a completly different field

I have actually published more scientific papers in genomics than this hack.

This worm was not the remit of individual schools and expecting them to take the lead and also the responsibility and potential future blame is a cop out on all sides

Agh another highly “thought-out and emotion free” viewpoint there. Yep, all teachers have been dodging work and we’re delighted to see a virus arrive. Good man, I’d say you’d be a handy boy teaching people haha

Before you say it, I’m not a teacher and wouldn’t fancy the job myself.

Its fact pal, say what you want. Schools in the North were asked to stay open for key workers children and many REFUSED but they still got paid full whack.

Maybe I teach more than you imagine you know all.

Too many ill informed who know Jack shit about the virus commenting on here. Take from that what you want! "

It simply has to be a fact because you said it is lol

And the pal bit means you really mean it

Well unless you state explicitly, your messages lead it to look like you simply expect classes to go back as they were pre - covid. So, it’s important that you clarify that.
