A little gentle reminder

Something I came across on social media, adapted somewhat by myself:

Perspective:

WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME BOAT!!!

I heard that we are all in the same boat, unfortunately it is not quite like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa.

For some, quarantine, lockdown, social distancing, face mask wearing (not everyone can or will, for that matter!), constant hand sanitising (leading to raw and open skin, killing all good and bad micro-organisms, allowing entry of infection through open sores!!!), glove wearing (leading to sweaty hands and fungal infections!) might be optimal. Quarantine and lockdown may have been a moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in flip flops, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this was/is a desperate financial & family crisis, loneliness, possibly a massive mental health crisis! And in fairness – who’s to say which life is more important – that of the person in a mental health crisis, which there are many of (speaking of experience here, not only as a previous sufferer but also as someone who was with someone for years with mental health issues!!!), or those that are more vulnerable and susceptible to getting the virus and dying with/from it or having to deal with the subsequent side effects after having had it! Isn’t each life as valuable as the next?!

For some that live alone they've faced endless loneliness. While for others it was peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters.

For some not getting on with Family and working from home, domestic abuse was/is rife...we never know what goes on behind closed doors.

With the weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales.

Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend. This will also be true for Christmas, which is only around the corner!

Some want to go back to work because they don't qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break social distancing rules and don’t wear face masks in public.

Some, during lockdown, were home spending 2-3 hours or more/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday. Schools need to re-open, because, quite frankly – do you want to be treated by the child that was home-schooled and has distance learned to become a nurse, GP, surgeon or dentist in the next 10 or so years?! I certainly don’t!!!

Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others look upon the active cases and deaths as a statistic! This statistic is possibly questioned as they feel fooled by mainstream media…

Some have faith and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come.

So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different.

Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing.

We are all on different ships during this storm, experiencing a very different journey.

Realize that and be kind.

agree on a lot of points. There is no one size fits all when it comes to people's life experiences.

My kids are going back next week but Im seriously looking into home schooling them. I think they faired a lot better with the one to one learning they did while on lockdown. Obviously college courses are a different kettle of fish

Yes, and that was my point exactly - there is no "one fits all" solution unfortunately!!! I have 2 children returning to school also. My daughter is on the spectrum, starting mainstream secondary school. She has had serious set-backs with lockdown and social distancing and can ill afford to be away from school much longer.

Well put together post OP!

I agree sincerely with the key pointof your post.

Unfortunately the extreme points from both ends of the spectrum tend to make the most noise about how this storm is impacting them and they believe it's a one size fits all pandemic. Hence we get conflict on the various solutions.

As a good friend of mine says.....good point well made Watson!!
