At easter my father gave me a puppy for my son for an easter present with the promise he would help me with him as I work unsocialble hours. My dad died 6 weeks ago through suicide but the puppy got hit by a car yesterday while we were out. (Arsehole neighbour kids keep letting him out of our garden when not their)

We brought him to the vet, there are 3 options. 1. Put him down.

2. Amputation of the leg which will cost 1000e plus 3. Operation to fix the leg which will cost 2000e

What would you do?

My sister is helping me with him now but when she goes to Australia when the travel ban is lifted from there. She is gone. And I have no help with the dog.

(Posting here as I have talked to some people here about my dad been sick, and I cant really put it on facebook)

Sorry for your loss. My cousins husband had cancer, young kids so he got them a dog. Wife was not keen on dog but because of situation went with it. Unfortunately the husband died. Wife had kids and dog, dog was lovely but she found it so hard with everything else, endured it for 6 months but then had to give the dog she taught kids would be devesated but they weren't. Dogs are hard work like another child need minding walking I understand you see the link to your dad but maybe the Kindest thing would be to put it down. Not easy either way xx

Have you asked your vet for an honest opinion on the best option? Ask about your dogs survival chances and quality of life if you decide to go through with option 2 or 3. You should also ask your neighbours to part fund the costs as it was partly their fault it happened

If you have the money then great. If you don't then you don't have it. There is no need to feel guilty about that.

Jaysus that's rough time you are having, it's clearly of sentimental value to ye

That been said as a farmer sometimes it's best to let go

If you are struggling with time as it is, the wee dog needs more attention if you go down the amputation route,

Tough decision but I think you already know the answer

Your house insurance will sometimes cover the costs

No1 concern is the pets welfare both now and long term.

If you can afford the ops then go for one of those options. A lot of vets allow you to do a payment option as well. A friend of mine had a dog years ago that had a leg amputated and once he had gotten used to not having the leg he was still able to run and jump and play.

But you also have to make sure it's the right decision for you as well. Talk to you vet and while they can't tell you what to do a good vet will give you good advise. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Have a good chat with your vet. My 6 month old kitten had a freak accident which led to a badly broken rear leg which was virtually beyond repair without some extremely expensive specialist surgery with no guarantee it would work. With the vets help and advice we chose amputation. She's several months post-op now and doing great. In fact she was mobile within days. The biggest thing we have to watch out for is keeping her weight under control as she's not as active now that she's a tripod.

Wishing you all the best with your decision OP x

So I have spent the last hour to different vets. Calling ever farmer I know to get me in contact with vets that would be off this weekend. I have found one local who will only amputate as a last resort. So he is going to set it and manage triggers pain.

Turns out he also knew my dad and is going to discount the work on it which is extremely nice of him.

My daughter is studying veterinary medicine at the moment.. Told her of your situation. Amputation will make things difficult for your pet but he may over come it. The operation will leave a weakness in the bone that in years to come may cause a fracture or a break again. While they do become part of the family, cold hard financial decisions need to be made and if either is a, stretch for you... Then I'm afraid the head must over rule the heart. Genuinely feel for you... You've had a tough station of it lately

Ok I have experience of this ...I had a puppy too few years back.. similar situation, but I went ahead with the surgery, it cost as you say nearly a thousand to Operate on the leg. They put a pin in his leg, unfortunately he got gangrene in the paw . The next option for me was either amputate the leg or put him down. It was the hardest decision to make . I put him down. I was in work full time and he needed constant care for 6/8 weeks after surgery, I didn't have the money to take time off work to do this.

The vet was very understanding as I had already done what I could in the circumstances. I still miss him. But in my opinion,do what is right for you, your situation etc. It's a hard choice an my heart goes out to you on it.

Dark x

I'm only seeing this now and it's broken my heart.

Have you decided what to do?

If money is an issue for you then surely there's a whip round we could do here from the forums? I'd be definitely willing to toss a few euro in to help given the absolute heartbreak of the situation.
