"So this morning I was just thinking back to a friends qoute from his father "never trust a man that doesn't drink qoute " and thought of a few more completely baffling Irish traits (atleast I feel they're Irish). Theres the trait of Irish people refusing to tell you what they earn. Then theres Irish people who buy a car or piece of furniture etc...for a good price but when asked say it was alot more or people that have come into money and let people know but let on it's a lot less. Why are we like this? " Talk of earnings, income, wealth etc was always seen as crass and to a large extent it really isn't anyone else's business. So I would think it's a combination of people trying to keep their private lives private while at the same time presenting the outward image of keeping up with the Jones' (or O'Malleys depending which end of the country)

We all know we're far from rich and just get by ,I find it weird but agree it's their own business

"I was brought up to believe discussing money or what someone earns is bad manners. Saying that, if people were more open about it the wage gap mightn’t be as bad as it is! I don’t know know what the men doing the equivalent of my job earn! " My job has published payscales and everyone with the same length of time done and at the same level gets the same irrelevant of gender. Overtime is generally either optional or whoever is in at the time again regardless of gender. But likely because I'm a fella I had never thought of this. If open discussion helps right the gender pay gap disparity I'm all for it

" IMO, the wage gap is less about employers being discriminatory and more about women still being expected to bear the bulk of the burden of care for children and elderly relatives.

"I'm happy with my salary, it's nobody else's business, and I, in turn, couldn't care less what others are earning, it's a contract between a person and their employer. Part of the reason for secrecy in this country is the petty jealousy and begrudgery of anyone perceived as doing better. " This. Pay is a relationship between an employee and an employer. It's noone else's business. Don't like your pay then ask for more or move and do something somewhere else. Get overpaid? Awesome. Don't be an asshole and brag. Simples.

No experience of the elderly relatives yet but agree with you on the childcare

"Being discreet about your earnings isn't a particularly Irish trait at all. It's exactly the same in my home country and my best guess in almost every European country. " It's the same in the entire western world as far as I know.
