Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

From RTE

Residents of counties Kildare, Offaly and Laois will not be permitted to travel outside of their counties except for in limited circumstances, including travel to and from work, under plans agreed by the Government.

Restaurants, bars, cinemas and gyms will be closed for the localalised restrictions, which are due to come into effect from midnight tonight and remain in place for two weeks.

But crèches will remain open and preparations for the re-opening of schools can continue

It's a Friday in the middle of the summer. Staycation maybe ? Doubt they decided to burn their house and head for high ground. I have a Kildare reg car, does that exclude me from travel even though I live in Wicklow ?

This is awful but if they lockdown the whole country it will close so many businesses, I do think area by area and hope that people will abide by it.

Appears that the outbreaks are linked to meat plants. Its several weeks since this problem was first highlighted, I wonder if these plants had done proper covid testing at the time, could this have been avoided??

Every morning The N7 and N4 have a huge amount of traffic heading towards Dublin

These people are obviously the ones that can't work from home so that probably won't change.

Everyone knew that the meat factories were going to be a big problem but nothing was done to them because Ireland Inc needs food and agriculture to keep moving.

I've worked during the last few weeks in the factories involved and they did a huge amount of work to protect the workers.

However to process meat safety to make sure its safe to eat the conditions in the factory are such that the virus can thrive.

Low temperature throughout and always a breeze to keep changing the air to stop the meat from going off.

The factories will reopen before all the small companies sacrificed to save them

Magical Forrest

Donegal was mobbed last bank holiday weekend by people from Dublin, kerry,Waterford, limerick, offaly,Laois and NI.

Most still here and more coming each day.

Cases in Donegal also going up.

I see soo many people touching their faces, coughing, not sanitising their hands.

We still have a pandemic going on.

I really don't want to go back to a lockdown.

Schools supposed to be opening in 4 weeks.

I've a Roscommon reg car and live in Kildare. I wonder what your logic proves?

There's correlation between the annual death rate of people falling into pools and the number of films Nick cage has made over the past 10 years.

Fingers crossed he stops making movies and we can eradicate pool deaths.

I was merely commenting on an observation at the time and reg plates between 201- 202 I surmised would have been registered in county of residence but I'm not pedantic,of course they can travel anywhere before midnight, isn't that what I said, locking the stable door after the horse has bolted

meat factories are a perfect breeding ground for covid..the germans did an experiment in a cold environment like a meat factory and it showed that covid can spread 26ft away from an infected person..they had outbreaks in their own meat factories..its worrying with winter approaching..air will naturally get colder and this thing will go crazy altogether..think most people will become infected its a case of when not if

I believe its only a matter of time before we all catch it. Its relatively harmless to those with strong immune systems. I think if we boost our immune systems this summer, with lots of sunshine on our skins, healthy eating and exercise, we have a good chance of getting over, what is really a bad flu.

Herd immunity is the only way we will get through this.

However it has proven fatal to some with no underlying health conditions so I don't agree with your statement that it is 'relatively harmless'

Use your sword. Its simple after a bit of practise . Practise on cheap bottles of cider first. When done right, you'll create a great impression.

I accept that,... But, we've survived MARS, SARS, MRSA, avian flu, swine flu,.. And if youve travelled, malaria, dengue fever, ebola, polio, tb, and lots of other horrible diseases. We live in a risk averse society, where NO risk is acceptable . There comes a time where we have to decide if we want to live, and take the risk, or live miserable lives.

Your profile says you are from Naas ? So therefore you should rightly be included in the lockdown. College of mine is now off work through no fault of his own because he shares a house with a guy who works in Irish dog foods, one of the first big localised break outs occurred there and the vast majority of employees are foreign nationals sharing homes and in some cases beds. This could be anywhere in Kildare or the surrounding counties now as there are a high number of meat and food processing plants in the location. All with the same type of low paid employees in similar living conditions. If there isn't local intervention and lockdowns then in three weeks time we will all be under lock and key. What other choice does the government have

Once u test positive u can claim €350 which is probably as much as the meat processors pay

However i get ur point the processors know there's an issue and should have being actively encouraging early declarations

The expression 'meat industry' alone implies the whole nastiness of that sector. The animal, the living being has been canceled out of the equation. It's industrialised livestock agriculture to satisfy our daily hunger for meat. The negative consequences of the meat production are so manifold it would become a very long post if I listed them all. It entails everything from animal cruelty, to deforestation, sources of pandemics and contributing up to 14% to the global greenhouse emmission.

Anyhow I know it won't change anything on the situation we've right now but this sector has to roll back to a more natural and more human approach and as concious consumers we can contribute towards a more sustainable production.

Its actually the right thing to do. There wasn’t s single case in cork yesterday with a population of 500k, dublin has 1.4 million people and had 5 cases yesterday. These countries don’t currently need to be locked down because they have it under control.

The outbreaks in the 3 counties are clusters that can be hopefully traced. The actual current community transmission is tiny and hopefully stays that way.

The meat industry is a pack of gangsters

Look at how they treated the farmers during the strike talks

There spokesman Cormac Healy refused to sit in the same room as the farmers

Shows the disrespect they have for them not much sound of the ignorant b.....d lately

Cowen was shafted because he was trying to bring a Chinese consortium to set up a plant for offal in co offaly to be a bit of competition to the big guns who control the whole market and I don't condone what he did eighter by the way

Their business visa were rejected last week

These same companies have nearly all low paid workers who are treated like slaves in conditions that are no social distant etc

They were told to take paracetamol to keep temp down coming in to work

It's very hard to be sympathetic to them

I feel sorry for the people living in those county who have been doing there best

Rant over

There was 226 cases over 14 days in loais offaly kildare. Thats 16 cases per day over 3 counties. Basically the same numbers as Dublin 5-6 cases per day per county.

Per head of population

Laois has 4 times the number of infections that Dublin has had over the last 14 days

And 60 times those of neighboring Kilkenny

Per head of population does not rest with 3 counties. If ur using per head of populations in a global pandemic u have to use the global per head of population.

Have to feel for the people in these areas as their businesses are now affected by inaction on the part of the meat processors and goverment.

We knew other countrys had issues with meat plants we should have being able to stave this off, although there's are a lot more meat plants than those in kildare begs the question how responsible the processors are for this

Completely agree but sure we also knew when covid was rampant in italy and Spain that no flights should be landing here and we knew that the elderly would need protecting in nursing homes but those in power have shown epic incompetence, yet we see superman murals on walls of these guys. I agree and counter that meat processors also knew and would it not have being in their interest to actively monitor their staff and offer better heath screening to their employees now they are closed and spending on deep cleans

Which we will pay for in the long run as they pass on the cost to preserve their bottom line

About a month into the lockdown I was asked by a customer to call to their meat factory as they had a production problem.

I went there, answered the covid questionnaire ,temp taken and gowned up.

In I went right through the boning hall with production taking place

The next day I sent a crew of 3 men into the same area to fix the breakdown

They went through the same procedure to get in.

2 days later the front of the Sunday Business post reported that they had 60 cases in the factory the same day I arrived.

I emailed them on the monday to complain and my men were furious

They never even replied and won't take my calls either.

I got paid and even though Im doing business with them 36 yrs I'll never have dealings with them again.I look forward to their next breakdown

That's the type of management in these factories

Totally agree seen a post during the week on another social media platform giving out that hand sanitizer wasn't been provided at a tourist spot. People think it's appropriate to steal it from churches and people expect businesses and other places to provide them. They have been shut for weeks. The cost of kitting premises out, training staff etc and people haven't the cop on to but a small bottle of sanitizer and carry it themselves God bless the Irish entitlement

Look obviously one too many wasn't going by the easy guidelines set out for all of us this could have easily happened anywhere else a D i wouldn't be surprised if it does at some point some just simply couldn't give a damn about what's going on and it is a big kick in the face to those who are going by the rules

Then we have the good people in the government allowing people from high risk countries to enter here making things worse

This actually not possible as our whole economy will crumble.. Regional lockdowns are the way forward.. Just unfortunately it's these 3 first.. I'm not surprised. Very few seem to be taking it seriously. I'm self employed and Kildare is half the name of my business but a lot of work comes from Dublin, meath, Westmeath etc but i havnt had a single phone call since the lockdown was announced. Funny thing is that the problem 'meat factory' surfaced already in May. 3 month later were and we're at the same point, it's like playing snakes and ladders, just that this version has way more serious implications. It also shows you the incompetence of the government to actually deal with arising problems, rather than being proactive they sit it out and hope for the best.

Which leads to more general questions: what has the government done in the last 5 month to be prepared for a winter with covid-19? My fear is fuck all.

It's only against government guidelines if they have symptoms or have been in close contact with a positive test. I don't know if carrolls is one of the companues affected by this so I can't say if they have gone against guidelines. But just a company doing testing does not mean they have to shut until all results are back.

Not unless you are showing symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has been positive. We get tested at work we don't stay away until results come back. The only ones who arent allowed in and go to get a test outside of work is any who have been somewhere like the bars shops etc where outbreaks have happened.Unless Carrolls have had an outbreak in there they are within their rights to allow work to continue as the testing is precautionary.

But the death figure is almost a false hope because this time around most of those who have contracted it are under 50 and are in a much better position to fight it. The worry is if the infection rate continues to climb it can only increase the risk of more elderly people picking it up. I suppose people have to make a choice as to what they deem an acceptable risk

"Also I know it looks bad on paper but we as a country have only had 4 deaths in the last 15 days and as far as I know 13 people in ICU at present

But the death figure is almost a false hope because this time around most of those who have contracted it are under 50 and are in a much better position to fight it. The worry is if the infection rate continues to climb it can only increase the risk of more elderly people picking it up. I suppose people have to make a choice as to what they deem an acceptable risk "

Also, this surge has just started, people who die from covid have often been ill for 4 to 6 weeks before succumbing to the disease.

"Funny thing is that the problem 'meat factory' surfaced already in May.

I totally agree there fog.. The whole thing since it started has been a fuk up regarding how the goverment handled this. All pr and spin and the sheep thinking they doing a great job dealing with it... Total mismanaged.. And yes the winter ahead will be a nightmare. They might tell us they have a plan in place. More pr bullshit. Just wait until the flu virus hits and it be difficult to tell between it and corvid..thats when we will see trolly records broken.. And no one able to fix the problem only one gang blaming another gang.. No one will be accountable.

Unfortunately I have to agree with all of that. A shared government makes it so easy to pass the blame.

All this shows that social distancing is effective as it's the wearing of masks but unfortunately certain ppl feel that they are too stupid to wear a and that there is no such thing as a virus. It's absolutely idiotic how some ppl carry on like they are invincible and have no respect for the safety of others.

Just stick to your own crew of ppl and don't mix with ppl you don't know

Wear a mask

... it won't kill you

Use soap and sanitised.... art the very least you'll smell better

So does that mean that everyone can act like fkn complete idiots and do whatever they like. Not really fair to the ppl who are actually making a strong effort to abide by the guidelines abd d keep this thing under control.

No one want to see anyone lose there business or there life for that matter but are the first ones to come and bang on about how there or someone they know is gonna go under. To be fair I think the government are doing their best to control this thing and it's down to everyone to pull their weight.

Don't forget we still have to pay for all this and the longer it goes on the more you and I are gonna have to fork out.

Like users above are saying it's down to everyone but unfortunately a lot of people simply don't give a shit.

I'm in retail and face masks are now mandatory. We've been advised to remind people at the door if they don't have them on but if they refuse we still have to let them in. It doesn't make any sense at all. That doesn't include people who have medical reasons for not wearing them.

A creche in Kildare where Mrs used to work had a parent bringing his child into the creche. It turns out he worked at one of the meat factories. He tested positive and he was at home sick but was bringing his child in every day.

The people running the meat factories were threatening to fire people if they called in sick. That's directly from someone who was working in one.

This is the shit that is going on right now around the Midlands. A combination of greedy employers and stupid people

They are not official laws just advice

It was the exact same as the main lockdown at the start

Loads of video's on youtube of people like Gemma O Doherty telling the Guards to feck off as it wasn't against the law to travel

Once the laws were official instead of just advice the videos stopped

People were always going to meet but a lot of people didn't. In the overall scheme of things two people meeting up or 2 / 3 couples getting is a drop in the ocean compared to all the other problems that have presented themselves.

Personally I hate masks, they do drive me insane when I'm in work for 10 hours and my beard itches like crazy. It has to be done though and most people are wearing them it's just some people holding out and refusing to. Until we get clear guidelines in retail to refuse people not wearing them there's not much we can do

Even with clear guidelines in retail many staff won't enforce it due to abuse and the threat of violence. I know a lot of companies have told employees not to enforce it for that reason especially when there are going to certain shops spoiling for a fight over it. That and staff ain't paid enough to deal with idiots who believe the anti mask propaganda that is doing the rounds.

The economy is already in a bad way. Do you really think that the government want to cripple it altogether by doing another full lockdown? If they do anymore it will likely be the same way that they have done it here in kildare, laois and biffo country. County by County back a phase. To do a full lockdown would be pure and utter madness
