Most of you people don't realise that I'd say 90% of us delivery drivers that deliver to you are contract drivers owning our own vans(less than minium wage) working ridiculous unsafe hours {60+ a week} but the big corporates and Government get away with it through iffy laws by doing it this way,It's wrong wrong wrong and killing drivers through depression.

I wasn't aware of that I'm sorry that sucks . I can't see anything that means higher prices for deliveries working tho. If I was in that spot I'd be changing careers that's for sure.

The transport workers have been worked to the bone over the lockdown,we use a courier service in our job and they have been struggling to keep ahead as most people have been ordering online.

I believe there are increased opportunities for upskilling at the moment.. perhaps you could look at retraining or upskilling. I wouldn't be one to think unions are the answer. If its not working for you then work towards moving to something else.

I would think it’s a very opportune time to organise and to demand better pay. The leverage is there as now an accepted vital cog in the economy. Might be difficult to bring such a dispirit group together. Lobbying for regulation to ensure that anyone with a van can’t undercut or scab. If the transport of people in cars (taxis) and good in larger vehicles (hauliers) can be regulated, I don’t see why not. Join an established union and commerce the process whereby they start looking for the regulation - it would appeal to them as they will see possibility of dues and inter union rivalry for members is intense so securing a new (and growing) sector within their ranks would interest them, I would think.

Alot of truck drivers are not on great money.the usual story in this country keep the working man/women down.

If an employee’s pay is 60€ a week laws are being broken, the employee should flip his finger at his employer at make dust.

If it’s a sole trader and the take home after overheads is 60€ it’s time to park the van and move on

You're reading it incorrectly.Its the 60 + hours per week he's working not taking home

A union in the transport game will never work, if any strike or other action was taken there'd be lads in the backdoor to grab the work like thieves in the night.

Then don't forget that the rouge hauliers association are looking for permits to bring in drivers from outside the EU under the guise of there being a shortage of drivers.

Yeah I'm not surprised by this. It's huge companies like Amazon that got us there with very competitive pricing in products but also shipping. But someone has to pay for it and of course it's the drivers and not the ones at the top.

I'm sorry op, I know my answer is no good to you, but there's some very good tips those posts above.

Any way you could optimise your tour?

Apologies l did but if a company are getting their drivers to work long hours outside of the safety regs that are law then it’s still time to make dust but also report.

If it’s a sole trader working long unsafe hours to make ends then like before it’s time for a big rethink

Sometimes we have to get off the wheel to realise we didn’t need to be on it in the1st place and there are other options available

My company only uses registered haulage contractors that employ their own drivers on 40 ft trucks so I know their hours are regulated

However I do know some of my suppliers use the likes of DPD and Fastway who use these so called self employed drivers.

All I can do to make it handier for the drivers is give them priority when they get to my premises so they all have my mobile number so that I can let them into my yard anytime including on their way home or into work the next day no matter the hour to suit them.

I believe the amount of deliveries the drivers have to do each day to earn a few quid is impossible to do in an 8 hr day with no breaks.

There's a huge amount of drivers that borrowed the money to buy a van and pay insurance to get going so they have a long line of people that will do the work for the price paid at the moment.

My company pays €30 to get boxes delivered 14 km from a supplier to me and yet people expect the likes of Amazon to give free shipping....something is wrong

Op the only advise I can give you is if possible is to try to get working for a company that has a regular customer route like a pharma company delivering to chemists.

You might still be self employed but not running all over the place with packages for different houses everyday which must be a killer
