Has anyone heard the new water safety ad, at least it’s new to me as I’ve not heard it before. It came on the radio today as I was driving home from work. I was close to tears after hearing it.

No, unfortunately it's the same story every summer here. A classmate of mine drowned the week our Inter Cert results came out, I've never forgotten it.

Not yet!

Surely it can't be as harrowing as some of those Road Safety ads

There's one in particular that's horrendous to watch!

For me it was bad partly because to boy sounds around the same age as my nephew so a bit close to home

Middle Earth

There was a child drown in mayo bank Holiday Monday only 5 so awful. Would highly remmomend the water safety course that normally takes place during the summer my kids did it in lake and even I learned so much from it.

I'm a very average swimmer but I've done a swift water rescue course as part of an organisation I was in at the time.

It not only opened my eyes to the obvious dangers but the risks that people take and the lack of awareness so unfortunately those hard hitting ads are the only way of getting the message through.

Is it one of them shock factor ads like the drive safety ones on tv where a distracted driver crashes into a kid?

Never heard the ad but from reading the comments I'm assuming it is.

To be fair and honest shock factor does work. Worked on me in real life many years ago.

When I was 17 my boyfriend back then was a blood donor. He had one of rarest blood types AB-. He got a call from a hospital one day when he was at work them asking to come asap as there was a local car accident. His boss didn't believe him and didn't let him out (he wasn't the most reliable type).

Next day both of us read an article in a paper about a tragic road accident where a little boy was killed.

I've always a phobia of needles and that sole experience has pushed me to be a blood donor.

When I was 20 I finally had enough balls to just go and do it and guess what, I was AB-. The exact and the only blood type who could have saved that child all them years ago. Only I couldn't as I was 17...

Missus

That must have shocked you alright

I think water safety ads are an all Ireland safety campaign so maybe you'll hear it on the radio but it definitely works to shock you.

The main road safety ad That used to get to me was the one where the your boy was playing in the garden and the car came through the wall and he was dead on the grass.

The flowers getting sliced in half was shocking

It’s pretty shocking but more subtle than the road safety ad. As BM said at first you don’t realise what it’s about.

We all need that kick in the pants at times
