Ok just thinking of my parents house when I was growing up.

Not sure if it was a Dublin thing or an Irish thing but they had a good room which in our case was the front room

This room was kept locked in case we had guests even though it was a normal 3 bed council house with only 2 rooms down stairs.

We had a china cabinet and in this cabinet we had stuff that was never used

Including a doll figure from Spain ...a little flamingo dancer with a red and black polka dot dress even though we never went on a foreign holiday.

Anyone else remember this room and what was in it.

Yes op ours was the same it we the front room the sitting room

It held the family pictures on the wall and any alcohol we had I rem two crystal drinking decanters on a silver tray ...thy where very of there then !

Also rem a volume of encyclopedias on the shelf ...

The room was mainly unused except for the odd guest or sales man ..

My own sitting room now is the polar opposite used as much as the kitchen and full of every thing..

My MIL had a "good sitting room". It has a full chess set laid out on a coffee table and beautiful comfy sofa. Never used

Not in my house but my posh nan had a posh room. No kids allowed in there. To me it seemed a pointless waste of space.

We had one when we were small and rarely used it. It was the brightest room in the house too, facing south it used get loads of natural light. A wall has since been taken out making an open planned kitchen/ dining room now.

I think every Irish family had one, plus the good china.

Still have the good china from my granny's house

She gave it to us when we got engaged and you can nearly see through it but its stored in the attic

I never thought of it as my parents thinking they weren't good enough as they were at the time but it must have been I suppose looking back.

Its funny because once all the kids moved out the good room was dispensed with and the room is used by both of them now to read the papers and listen to music.

Mind you I did lose my virginity in there without breaking any china

I moved into my Great Aunt's old house after my separation. It had not being lived in for several years so it was like a hoarders paradise. Even though it's a tiny two bed cottage one of the bedrooms was her used as the good room. The walls were adorned with holy pictures. The cabinets were heaving full of "good china" and ornaments brought back from far flung destinations like Tramore

Yup...me ma in her Hilda Ogden curlers too

I think all our Ma's had Hilda Ogden curlers

Mine used to wear them to bed with a net type cap over them.

I don't know how they ever had kids

We had a floral patterned 3 piece that was perpetually covered in a clear plastic wrapping...if we had to go in, the shoes came of. We had the bone China...the drinks cabinet and the only coffee table in the house. My mother reared three boys which wasn't easy for her...her good room was her corner of the world where she could consider as being civilised.

That's the one.......our one was a mad orange color. No one in our family smoked but it was still there for visitors

South Side.

And the record collection, my dads favourite musicals. And floral pattern wallpaper, the soft lino,.. It was a bright peaceful room, and the only room in the house with a key in the lock.

My nana has a good room, decorated in the 60s and it's only been used a couple of times a year since then. It's like walking into a time capsule.

Has the most comfortable couch in the world, that was bought for crazy money when they decorated but no one's allows to use it.

All of the money went into that room and the rest of the house suffered as a result. So strange.
