Are parents responsible?

I've never seen so many gangs of lads (and recently girls) cycling in the middle of the road and shouting things at people than I have now, not to even mention the ones fighting and shooting each other...

Now, I'm not one to point the finger, but there are definitely fab couples spending too much time on here and not rearing their children

But seriously, should there be consequences for parents?

As someone who came from a rough area I don't accept a lot of the bs excuses I have heard because all the scumbag parents I know have scumbag children. I can think of a minimum of 50 and that's no exaggeration (my entire class). My two closest friends were in prison for years, they also both had family members in prison too. Luckily I had parents who cared about right and wrong.

Partly for that reason, I think parents definitely are a big part of it. I know many with decent parents and they all went a different route despite being best friends with these guys, especially me, who couldnt be more opposite to my best friend growing up, so it's not really who you hang out with at the end of the day... in my experience.

However, I do know some parents try, they just don't have the strength or support to back them up so despite the above, I think one innocent parent suffering the consequences of their childs bad behaviour when they don't deserve it means no, don't go after the parents. Figure something else out, like educating the children a little better.

What's your opinion?

Obviously your parents were/are decent and conscious people who did the very best they could to rear their children properly, and instill them with a bit of common sense and decency.

Unfortunately many people from a socially deprived backgrounds spend most of their time drinking and smoking , so if one is unlucky enough to be dragged up by feckless parents you haven't much of a chance.

Many of your contemporaries who ended up in prison were the progeny of alcoholic parents and most likely are suffering from alcohol syndrome. Anyone with this has a propensity for violence and reckless behavior, this coupled with a very low intellectual capacity.

Yes the parents are to blame its up to the parents to teach there children right and wrong my parents always knew where we were mind you saying that we werent allowed out after half 7 in the evening in bed by half 8 my parents were very strict with us and we got smacked thankgod they were so strict as it kept all 5 of us on the straight and narrow you choose to have them so learn to discipline them

Think you’ve hit the nail on the head there. Had the same experience, got brought up quite well but I know of others who were basically let run loose and do what they want, many of whom now have criminal records.

Think some serious questions have to be asked of some parents though, how could you just sit back and watch your kid going around with Canada goose jackets, Rolex’s and things you can’t afford yourself while they’re either not working, on the dole, in school etc. but then act completely surprised when the Gardaí knock on your door saying they’ve just been arrested? Especially when it’s no secret of what goes on these days regarding the drug trade and crime around the country.

I was raised by great parents that taught me good morals and values most I've kept but some out dated and left behind.

The main one being respect for people which seems lost on most of the youth today, this sense of entitlement that can make your blood boil, it's not happening with my kids no f##king way

Society isn't made up by tbe nuclear family anymore and with so many outside factors I don't agree that the parents are always to blame.

Some kids lose their parents, parents remarry, kids are abused by others that parents have been unable to protect them from. Is it a parent's fault that such kids end up in care? If so, which parents do you want to blame?

What makes it worse is the fact that it’s often a generational thing too, so unless it’s clamped down on they can stay that way for much of their lives and pass it on to their own children and it just continues

And just to add i was brought up by a single parent and during the troubles i dont take with all this oh but he has no dad or oh no he has no parents they have grandparents aunts uncles plenty of people to show them the right path

No, they don't always have plenty of people to show them the right path and over 20 years of working in children's services earns me the right to say that

Any surely if kids end up in the care system with no parents and no family to show them the right path they surely its up to the people in the care system to teach them is it not someone has to take responsibility just because you work in a certain job doesnt mean you know all about it i work in the caring profession for 19yrs but still hell of alot i dont know and probably never will know

Trouble is teenagers are let away with everything think they know it all and show no fear towards adults and attack who ever they want there all big brave thugs when there in groups but cowards on there own the clothes they wear is like a uniform for scumbags what needs to be brought in is a law that there parents and teenagers themselves be fined heavily . My lad is 17 in august and never leaves the house a lot to do with the fact he was beaten up few years ago and knocked his confidence back about going out anywhere they picked on him in school and bullied him so took him out of that school and put him in another but it didnt stop there they gave us hell for 2 years at the house and guards done nothing as usual the culprits got away with it . So the parents are to blame for there kids behaviour as long as there not under there feet they dont care they would rather not know who there with or where they hang out !!!
