My grandfather was English, he was in the Royal Navy during WW2. His ship was a destroyer escorting supply convoys across the Atlantic ocean. Apparently they sank a lot of German submarines during the war. He was one of the lucky ones, he and his ship managed to survive many a battle during the war, and he was decorated by King George.

Nobody wins in war except for politicians, brave men and women on both sides get forgotten. That's why in Europe we dont "celebrate" dates, we "commemorate" dates. Nothing to celebrate about a shit load of people dying for a few people's ideals.

I wonder what the people of Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria etc etc made of their post war freedom.

Meanwhile Britain and the USA continued their self-interest driven meddling and interference in other countries around the world for decades.

I wouldn't be in favour of celebrating war in anyway.

But as bad as Ireland history with the UK and the US's horrendous foreign policy since ww2 I don't think anyone can honestly argue that the regime they prevented from potentially taking hold across the world wouldnr have been much worse.

Because of that I am grateful to the people that gave their lives in the War

It was Russia that drove the Germans back from Stalingrad to Berlin Germany pushed most of its army to the eastern front to try and stem the advance. If it wasn't for Germany's war against Russia the rest of Europe would have been fully taken over by Germany. I'm not saying Russia where good guys but they absolutely hammered Germany and gave the allies time to regroup.

No matter what you political views are . A lot of Irish people died in ww2. Some say they should not have gone as Ireland was nutural . But it wasn't as clear cut as that ...my uncle was 19 . No work or prospects here so he went to seek employment in uk . Yes he had a choice he could have come home . He wasn't forced to join . But he was 19 and took the wrong choice .he went to war . And was killed with his 3 irish mates at the battle of dunkirk. . At the time he had nothing to come home to ...

What a crock of shit!!

Germany had full control of Europe, except for Russia when it went on the offensive in barbarossa.

Also, America hadn’t even set boots on the ground by the time Russia “absolutely hammered Germany” so how did it give the allies time to regroup??

Maybe when your facing 86% of the whole German war machine as they did the time of Barbarossa, they didn’t have much choice

The western allies never faced at any point more than 20% of the combined German forces

It was to recapitalize the British banks in Ireland, was around 3% of the total,

we were charged at the highest rate of all the loans (and it was a loan, not some benevolent handout)

It was done to stop the contagion spreading to the UK parent banks.

I’m sure like myself

you would have preferred if Ireland had refused this loan, let those UK owned banks fail and maybe let the British Taxpayer pick up the losses instead?

As regards not holding germany accountable well Ill think you will find germany has been held accountable many times over and germans even though they may have been born years after the events are never allowed to forget what happened.

I’m not going to deny that Britain and it’s colonial past has committed some terrible acts but that was the past. We’re not holding Germany, Russia, Japan etc etc etc to account for the things they have done.

It’s typical of the Irish tho to overlook all the things colonialism has brought, and let’s face it, they aren’t many countries in the developed world that haven’t done it, and whinge about freedom, the famine or whatever else happened 200 years ago that you just can’t let of!

It’s just as well the brits imposed the English language on Ireland, makes trading with Britain, your closest neighbour much easier. Same goes with the penal system, education system etc etc etc. Imagine where Ireland would be without the brits. "

Wow

the arrogance of that last paragraph even when presented of the evidence of the damage the British did to Ireland

You seem it makes it “easier” for Ireland to trade with Britain as if we are still dependent on Britain for trade

Our trade with Britain is now at 11% of our total exports

Also, every country in the world trades with countries which they don’t share a common language with,it doesn’t seem to be a barrier to them.

The fact that your ignorant bigoted nonsense is tolerated here is an indication of where “Ireland is without the Brits”

You have lived under the blanket of the British empire for a very longtime and have been fortunate enough to avail of, nearly, all that it provides.

yep ancestors starved and beaten out their homes, the great famine, indentured servitude, the black and tans etc etc. so very very thankful

"Wait.. wasn't Ireland neutral in WW2? Why was that again?"

Ireland were neutral in name only. The Irish government actively aided the german regime. Spying on the Uk for the germans and gave safe haven for many nazi war criminals after the war giving them new identities and documentation. The Irish government believed Englands difficulty was irelands opportunity and was fiercely anti-semitic too, which naturally made them sympathetic to the nazi regime. There’s a very good RTE documentary on YouTube that goes over it all. Worth a watch during lockdown

So Irishmen were simultaneously fighting and dying on the front lines for the British army, and also spying against the effort for the Germans?

The objective of colonialism isn’t for the benefit of the colonized

As regards the British bailing us out a decade ago

It was to recapitalize the British banks in Ireland, was around 3% of the total,

we were charged at the highest rate of all the loans (and it was a loan, not some benevolent handout)

It was done to stop the contagion spreading to the UK parent banks.

I’m sure like myself

you would have preferred if Ireland had refused this loan, let those UK owned banks fail and maybe let the British Taxpayer pick up the losses instead?

What a moronic post.

the arrogance of that last paragraph even when presented of the evidence of the damage the British did to Ireland

You seem it makes it “easier” for Ireland to trade with Britain as if we are still dependent on Britain for trade

"Wait.. wasn't Ireland neutral in WW2? Why was that again?

I did say the Irish government. And yes they were allowing there own countrymen to join the British army while at the same time betraying them giving intelligent to the germans. I have the upmost respect for those who gave their lives In WW2, British, Irish, American, Russian or whoever so that i can live in a free democratic society.

You left out the bit about refueling the uboats and leaving the lights on

No mention of the quick repatriation of allied servicemen back to their bases whilst the Germans spent the duration of the war in the Curragh

No mention of the Irish fire brigades going to the aid of bombed out Belfast which the British had left defenseless

No mention of the weather reports from black sod bay which determined the success of the D-Day landings

No mention of the hundreds of Nazis which the British gave shelter to and supported post war

Loyalists such as yourself are always quick to paint a picture of a country which was neutral and under no obligation to help anyone.

It still must shame Unionists to this day that Pathe news stopped showing newsreels of Orange parades

once the Allies started wondering

why so many proud and fit sons of Ulster were marching up and down streets instead of fighting at the front.

I can go into it now for you.

Let’s start with the English language shall we.

Roughly 4% of Ireland use the Gaelic language in everyday use, yet 99% of the population speak English. Quite helpful when the 4 surrounding countries all speak English as a first language. No need to teach English as a second language in schools and therefore not be as fluent as in Gaelic-4% remember.

Judicial system, civil service, education system, health service all of the sociological infrastructures put in place over the years are roughly inline with what has happened throughout Britain. I guess that’s what 800 years of “occupation” brings.

Alignment of services like these between, people, counties, countries-Europe being the prime example-is a benefit to the population in general, as countries working together, with similar views and ideologies have better outcome of results.

I don’t mind you making comments like “moronic” it’s your opinion, I don’t care for it. You like others say that, deny what I’m saying and yet offer no counter to what I’m saying, only denial and name calling.

What a moronic post.

Facts!

'Facts'. Almost an even more moronic post than the earlier one.

'Imagine where Ireland would be without the brits'.

Do explain your evidence to illustrate why Ireland would be worse off?

Also, how did you gain this ability to know the future?

For a guy that talks so much about all Britain has to offer you should go and live there."

I can’t change the past but not will I deny it. To live in Britain and be able to avail of all it provides is amazing! I’m very lucky.

You have lived under the blanket of the British empire for a very longtime and have been fortunate enough to avail of, nearly, all that it provides.

yep ancestors starved and beaten out their homes, the great famine, indentured servitude, the black and tans etc etc. so very very thankful

The language you speak today. The judicial system, civil service, education system, the railways.

Christ, they even bailed you out a decade ago, albeit in favourable terms for Britain but that business.

ENGLAND has shit all over Britain at some point but deny it or not we’re in a better position than some countries around the world because of them. But you crack on mate

You seem to miss out on the penal laws where the English language was imposed on us,the Education system which was imposed on us,the judiciary which was imposed on us

The Railway system which wasn’t there for the benefit of the natives but to move Troops around quickly and to facilitate the export of agricultural produce cheaply and efficiently for the British market

What a moronic post.

Facts!

'Facts'. Almost an even more moronic post than the earlier one.

'Imagine where Ireland would be without the brits'.

Do explain your evidence to illustrate why Ireland would be worse off?

Also, how did you gain this ability to know the future?

For a guy that talks so much about all Britain has to offer you should go and live there.

He already does??? Says nort IRELAND on his profile.

Correct Northern Ireland In my opinion north south east and west of this beautiful country is all IRELAND. "

Ireland is beautiful. I love it! I try to visit as much of it as I can.

you would have preferred if Ireland had refused this loan, let those UK owned banks fail and maybe let the British Taxpayer pick up the losses instead?

What a moronic post.

Facts!

'Facts'. Almost an even more moronic post than the earlier one.

'Imagine where Ireland would be without the brits'.

Do explain your evidence to illustrate why Ireland would be worse off?

Also, how did you gain this ability to know the future?

For a guy that talks so much about all Britain has to offer you should go and live there.

He already does??? Says nort IRELAND on his profile.

Correct Northern Ireland In my opinion north south east and west of this beautiful country is all IRELAND.

Ireland is beautiful. I love it! I try to visit as much of it as I can. But says on your profile you already live in IRELAND.

It’s a big place. Not that big I'm sure you could travel from the north to south in half a day.

Why don’t you just make your point.... Say what mate.

Nevermind "

So how's the Craic up your end mate.

"I don't get the sentiment... Soviets were as bad, if not worse then nazis. Europe had to choose between two evils... and Eastern Europe suffered the most after being under soviet occupation for fucking decades...

Soviet Empire v Nazi Empire v British Empire

Not much between them in how they treated their subjugated peoples

The use of famine as a weapon of war being one prime example

Nonsense comment of the day!!

Another believer in the benevolent British Empire

I didn't name call, I said your comments were moronic. And you haven't given me reason to think otherwise.

You never answered my question, why do you think Ireland would have been worse off without what Britain imposed?

You just offer a list as if that is some sound proof.

How do you know the 'Judicial system, civil service, education system, health service all of the sociological infrastructures..' are better than what may have evolved naturally?
