Oh I don't think I can handle "cruel and black" right now! I need something to relieve the sense of impending doom, not worsen it! But thanks for the suggestion!

The GOT series is amazing, much better than the show with the remaining hope of a decent ending!

Otherwise, anything by Jeffery Deaver is a good shout, Lincoln Rhyme series will keep you entertained for a good while. Bone collector is Number 1 in that series so a familiar beginning point

The Glass Woman by Caroline Lea. It's set in Iceland in the 17th century and it's a folk/goth horror about a young woman marrying a man she barely knows whose previous wife was rumoured to be a witch.

I haven't been able to start another book since I finished it, it's just beautifully written, edge of your seat stuff.

I recently really enjoyed one called The Taking of Annie Thorne and another called The Good Sister. The first one is set in a Yorkshire mining area about a child's disappearance but with supernatural elements. The second one is about a Muslim girl who goes from London to Syria to join an extremist group and her father who goes to try to get her back. Both very good, obviously very different.
