Working in Derry/ Londonderry.

Hi folks. The company I work for has asked me if I would go over to work in L/Derry for a few months due to a sharp rise in illness due to Covid. Before I decide I wondered how safe it would be for an ex British soldier to work there? Due to the work involved I would be working in both loyalist and nationalist areas. The same areas I patrolled in the 80s. My boss is a civilian and is blissfully unaware of the history of the troubles. I probably couldn't keep my military past to myself as obviously it is in my company records.

I personally wouldnt be to sure. All I can say the previous company I worked for has a store there and most managers I talked just under a year ago have said that the situation is getting worse specially cause of Brexit. If you feel you arent safe dont go. No job is worth your safety

I'd try and get in touch with Colum Eastwood the local MP or Mark Durkan MLA (or the SDLP office) for advice and you can share a lot more info with them than you can on here.

Alternatively I don't understand why you can't discuss your concerns with your employer. Or have you raised concerns and they've been ignored?

My boss is only 30 and doesn't understand the reason I would feel uneasy about working there. To him the troubles were years ago and he has no idea of the murders which were done by both the British Forces and the Republican/ Loyalist paramilitaries. I do not use the word murder lightly because I am aware of Bloody Sunday and the way the British army acted that fateful day when young lives were tragically cut short by trigger happy soldiers. He however seems to think that all this has healed. Where as I know it can never fully heal. Rightly so.

Perhaps I should go on the side of caution and stay here. A shame as I would be helping to rid the community of this dreadful virus.

Keep yourself to yourself as we are supposed to do right now

Things aren’t that bad over here and who “on the street” is gonna know who you are anyway mate. No disrespect. But I’d not know who you were unless you publish it. You’ll be grand. There’s trouble here yes. But sure what city doesn’t have trouble. You’ve got gangs and thugs everywhere. I’d say come on Jamie. Do your best for the people you can save anywhere

You’ll be grand

He's also used the term

Derry/Londonderry in the title as a hell of a lot of people call it.

Does it even matter anymore ...I'm an equal opportunity pervert

Religion or political persuasion doesn't interest me in the slightest and I'm sure most people are like that now

It’s not as bad as people make out, yes the dissidents are hell bent on ruinin all the good progress made to make this place peaceful again. But why would any Derry people be interested in your history? What they don’t know shouldn’t bother them.

As the other Derry man has said here contact local MPs and see what advice they can provide. Your army background shouldn’t be of interest to anyone other than you and your employer.

This ??. A British soldier kicked my brother’s teeth in when he was 4 years old. He holds no grudge and neither do I. Your no more likely to have any hassle in Derry than anywhere else unless you look for it. Take the job

If you ever change your mind about Derry or anywhere else in NI, you will 99% of the time be fine. Obviously don’t mention your military past but otherwise there wouldn’t be an issue, maybe just a bit of slagging

I think putting down here that you were a solider and that you previously patrolled the streets there in the 80’s is opening up a can of worms that unfortunately can’t be closed now. I can’t see the relevance in putting it on the thread whatsoever and is asking for trouble. Hopefully if you do go, you keep it zipped about your past or it could be a one way ticket if some find out. You know, it’s one of those Darwin moments isn’t it?

Really?? I love this!!! NOT!!!

I was brought up in a mixed marriage household and attended an RC school, I also attended gospel meetings on the green with my friends. I've been to confessions and took my pioneer badge but I've also been saved too many times and look where that got me (fab) lol. Makes me laugh and angry at the same time, people from "Derry" carrying the queens money and people from "Londonderry" celebrating "Derry Day".

Get a life and move on, we have a lot more to be worrying about than what to call a city in Northern Ireland!!

There's a lot more going on in our world right now.... just think about everyone round you and if you are ever unlucky enough to need help from a nurse/doctor/PPE distributor please don't let yourself and the rest of us Northern Irish people down by asking them if they a a Brit before you willingly accept or decline the help you need!

Rant over!

My military past is in my company records. My boss asked me as he knew i knew the area. I wasnt attention seeking. I just wanted to know how the feelings were towards ex soldiers. I had no intention to bring my past up but if it got out through my dopey boss i wanted to know if it would cause me concern. My life now is as opposite as you can get from military life. I work for a health care charity. Anyway my apologies to those i may of offended and my thank you to those who privately messaged me to give advice. Peace to you all.

I'm off the opinion that this is a question and subject that shouldn't be on a site such as this even tho to be fair the forums are here to ask what ever anyone wants to, but seriously it does just show after the bigoted replies show exactly that alot of peoples small minds haven't changed 1 bit which is just sad especially since most insist they still want peace!!

Id say going by the remarks it's better to stay put and help people who will be genuinely grateful for it

Enjoy life and get on with it.

As for the OP have a bit of cop on most people either catholic or protestant call L/Derry, Derry.

You sound like you have alot of anger because you worked as a solider in the North during the troubles.

You will find problem or trouble if your looking for them.

"Wow these threads really bring out the worst in people. Never been to Derry/Londonderry... and after reading this.. I never want to. Gobshites on both sides.

Maybe we should have held on to cork instead of Londonderry lol.

This "we" you speak of includes me. I'm a brit living in Republican Cork for 15 years... and in those 15 years living here I've encountered less bigotry than I've heard in this thread. Its shameful.

Calling people 'gobshites" isn't bigotry? "

No it isn’t.

Do you know what bigotry is ??

Because it appears that you don’t......

It just seems odd to target a whole city or group of people like that. Might be better to visit the place first rather than relying on a few random internet posts, anyway carry on.

I'm hardly gomma drive from the bottom to the top of this island considering the unpleasant atmosphere and bigotry on both sides that seems to arise whenever the name of the city is mentioned. There are many lovely places to go here without the unpleasantness. I can do without it.
