I do a lot of fettling, mainly on repairing or upcycling, reusing. I fettle with my motorcycles and classic cars all the time. Its a northern term I believe.

To fettle was to take the rough bits of cast metal objects.

But today it's generally to fix

things or make things better.

Henry Cole the vintage motorcycle fanatic is a keen fettler.
