Are sarcastic replies acceptable if the message received is simply laughable? Or does etiquette demand to give the sender the benefit of the doubt?

Depends on the message. You can be sarcastic in a fun way without undermining the person unless of course it warrants stronger.

Just remember that sarcasm doesn't always translate well in writing.

The great Oscar Wilde said "sarcasm is the highest form of intelligence but the lowest form of wit"

For me it's a stable if who I am and how i interact with people. I suppose people feel that sarcasm is always a very harsh way to communicate. I think some of that comes from the fact that it comes the Greek and Latin for "to tear flesh".

For me you can be sacastic without being nasty.

I think any response is ok, as long as you are willing and able to take the response that comes back.

If you don’t like people making a comment about your weight, height, looks etc then you might want to think twice about making the first sarcastic comment.

People are people and this is a community. I think sometimes we lose sight of that.

Slightly but tongue in cheek though ones. Don't tell them you will meet by the clock tower though and not turn up to piss them off that's happening far too often at the moment looking at the number of guys complaining on the forums.

I don't mean nasty or cruel. More along the lines of "really? You can see that from just my mouth?" in response to "you look horny"

It’s a fine line though - too many people just don’t ‘do’ sarcasm and it just goes downhill from there.

Which is a shame ‘cos sarcasm is so much fun - and comes naturally to some of us. Too naturally..
