Curious as to how accurate the whicker mans depiction of pagans was. Anyone enlighten me?

And are you at all involved in any nudist or naked adventures or orgies?

We have come across quiet a few on fab. A lot down south.

I call myself what I am....I am a witch. Not white, black, wiccan, eclectic or any of those weird boxes people put themselves in.

I am a witch. Simples...

Pagan is a catch all term and in my opinion doesn't have a specific meaning other than not Christian.

There's quite a lot of misinformation surrounding paganism and I tend to avoid using the term.

I use the term Paganism to describe the old religions that never really had a name. Like the Norse, Gothic, Celtic, and so on. Its also used for the religions more attuned to nature

"Some one should probably say merry met "

(Nessarosa writing)

Sometimes its not always appropriate. The Wiccans brought it in to use (I'm not wiccan) and I think it has been over used along with "Blessed be"

When my witches meet, we use normal language....we try to be who we are.

To each their own.

Just for the record its origins:

"An early English translation of German poet Goethe's Faust includes the following lines from the "Chorus of Witches":

On the Brocken the witches

are flocking-

Merry Meet - merry part -

How they gallop and drive.

A common phrase in 18th century England. It's association with the Craft is based solely on this poem."

(Quoted from paganspace forum, Ross)

I am Pagan in the sense that i am non christian, or more precisely non-judea based social construct.

Over the years in the never ending search of the answers to questions like the meaaning of life?, and out of all those billions of star systems ae we really alone? or my personal favourite: if we are made in gods image, does that mean we are creators ourselves?

These days i am very lapsed, as the more i delved into religious beliefs of all flavours the more i realised they all have one thing in common: A hierarchy. The single most divisive social construct known to humankind. The arch bishops, the popes, the high priest/ess, the grand pooh bah, the 33rd degree grand wizard. All of them think they are better than me as they have a grand title.

They are not, so therefore i am solitary, individual, very lapsed and let the flow happen, and most of all, no purple kaftan divine feminists, altar boy botherer, or sabrina wannabe sprinkling fairy dust and unicorn shit get close.

Guess that makes me solitary no path but my own.

Most vital of course is the pagan orgy, the Romans were very good at it by all accounts, but my love of orgies has nothing to do with paganism ....sadly which like others was always my favourite media use of artistic license.

I am but my Mrs. isn't,I think she still errs on the side of the Anglican Church, but not in a particularly committed way.

My pagan (ism) is more earthcentric. I stopped subscribing to the tenets of organised judeo Christian teachings many years ago.

I need to Re-phrase.. it gets on my tits when someone says their religion is Pagan or Paganism. That just means your not a follower of one of the main religions...

You're Norse, Wiccan, Tengri.. fine whatever. Just not A Paganist or follower of Paganism.

I guess that depends on your definition of "pagan"

I'm the same way "Christian" can cover a multitude of paths, pagan can be used to denote a follower of pagan path without the need to try to explain the individual path

I identify myself as Heathen, used in the context of Northern European Pagan.

But everyone at work still insist on calling me a druid!

Hello Sir.. You make a good point. I guess there are a multitude of Faiths within Christianity and Islam and other major religions.

I've had this argument a few times and it's more an irritation than anything else. My Dad was a history teacher and my Mum was an English teacher - so i've grown up being aware of the dictionary definition.

When I joined a Facebook Group about this.. I caused a bit of a stir, bickering over semantics. The longer I was there, the more my eyes opened as to what a generally open and accepting group of people they tend to be, whichever branch of the Pagan tree they cling to. So the irritation gets milder and milder.

The US Armed Forces actually accept Heathen on Dog Tags for soldiers. Though Heathen is another itch I personally can't get my head around. As I favour the dictionary term over all else. That's my problem though, If you can put it on dogtags it should be good enough for anyone.

I was just quite confused about Pagans on that site. They were all claiming to be Pagans, which is true. But some where describing Paganism in terms of it being a religion. That still doesn't work for me.

For me that's an insult to Heathens, Tengri, Wiccan and other developed, stand alone religions that have existed for centuries and have their own gods or pantheon and Nothing to do with one another. Unlike Christians who all recognise Jesus in some way or another.

It made it very confusing to learn about each one from the modern day practitioners and what they got from it.

Not to mention the Modern Pagans who have actually started a religion called Paganism in the 70s that hasn't been officially recognised yet.

Then you have those who simply take the bits they like the best from each Pagan Religion they find and create their own Woolworths pick n mix religion and call themselves Pagans.. true.. and I see nothing wrong in that... but it's so confusing for outsiders.

A lot of people moaned in there that they were fed up of having to explain themselves. I just felt, if the labels were clearer, it'd be easier for outsiders to grasp and unserstand you all better.

Like I said.. on the whole.. bar a few supremacist or fundamentalist apples.. Pagans, in my experience are a pretty cool, accepting and enlightened bunch.

Pagan and Heathen are derogatory terms, or were used as such. Still defined as such in modern dictionaries. TO describe those outside of the main religion of whichever region you're in. Muslims were called Pagans by Christians, so it's not even an Abrhamic thing like many on Facebook tried to argue.

I'm not religious at all, but I do find it very interesting, especially the Heathen side and the Tengri, which is more Shamanic animal and spirit worship with one All Powerful God, but that's only because I love the Mongols
