Where most go wrong are sending one line (or one word) messages. "Hi" won't cut it with anyone. It might get a sarcastic reply from me but that's all.

READ PROFILES, DON'T JUST LOOK AT PHOTOS I can't emphasize this enough. A nice message that mentions something in someone's profile that you share a common interest in will get their attention. "Are you free this afternoon" will get you blocked.

Then why would you bother message them if they have nothing your interested in. They're probably fake anyway.
