What do you think the best opening lines are to use here, I always feel boring when I use, 'Hey how are you?' or something along those lines

No point having someone else's words in your message. It doesn't reflect you, then what's the point. I could give you the best opening message ever, but its not your personality or thoughts.

Was more of a general guidance, or how many people use hey how are you... is that a standard way to break the ice

Most common I get is ... I like your profile ... But they clearly haven't taken any notice of it !!!

Yeah exactly, seems such a boring answer.. face to face id say something alot different than here, but its much harder to make a connection quickly online

no its a pain you need something that says you have read the profile we just delete messages where guys dont bother

What else would you say to someone you dont know?? Your hardly going to spill your guts out to a stranger and tell them all about you in real life so why is it expected here? A nice 'hello how are you' is just fine then take it from there, not having a go at anyone but sometimes feels like expectations on here are unrealistic.

I really like it when someone has evidently read my profile and hints a reference or two in the opening message.

Keep it short and light and add a little wit
