Younger work colleague

Hi

Bit of advice needed.

Work Christmas do, ended up with a small group out until 4am, spent lots of time talking to one of our team who was going through a few problems with her fella and was having an affair.

Long story short, she ended up back in my room - just chatting, nothing happened apart from a fair bit of flirting going on

Feels a bit awkward in work…… do I broach the subject or just let it lie and see what happens if our again. Don’t want to overstep mark

Depends what you mean by awkward...

Maybe she feels awkward that she told you personal problems, and you might tell others. Maybe she feels awkward that nothing happened that night? Maybe she feels awkward because you feel awkward, and she doesn't know why?

You know this girl better than anyone on here is likely to. You'll also know what 'awkward' means in these circumstances.

If it was me (Sean), I would assume this young girl was maybe looking for some advice and support from an older person. I would approach her without displaying any awkwardness, drop a coffee on her desk when she's busy, and simple say "I enjoyed our chat the other night, I hope you were able to get things off your chest. If you need to vent again, feel free to come have another chat".

This gives her the option to approach you. Plus the various options about WHY she wants to approach you. More advice? To simply vent? Something else?

It could have been a darn sight more awkward if you had misread the flirting - assuming that what was 'going on' was from her side - given that a fair amount of alcohol had probably gone down by then. This was in connection with a work event, even if not on the premises, and there seems to be a senior/junior relationship that might be portrayed as a power thing. I'm nothing to do with HR (an abbreviation for horror in my experience) but I'd say leave it alone, for the time being at least. Let her have her affair and get that out of her system.

A young woman is having problems with her partner, having an affair and goes back to an older colleagues room after a work night out. I think you did the right thing in just talking and should continue as you were before this happened.
