When I change my avatar I get a pop up message saying only pics set to public can be used as a avatar, however I've come across lots of profiles which Thier avatar isn't set for public display , is it something new or a glitch in the system ?

Make the pic public. Set as avatar. Then put the pic back to friends only

yes that works but I've been able to set friends or private pics as avatar without the swapping about

Think it's a new thing. I noticed it when I swapped my avatar a few weeks back
