How do I retrieve messages from months ago if I haven't deleted them? Do I need to delete newer messages to see older ones?

You can't. Messages over a certain age are automatically deleted, as I understand.

I would assume this is in an effort to conserve valuable server storage space.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, or shed further light on this
