Message thread disappeared

All the sent and received messages in a specific thread/conversation with one person disappeared. I don't think i deleted it but if its deleted is there any way to recover it?

If they had the messages would still be there but would say "user no longer on site" so I don't think that's it

No it changed ageeees ago that if a person deletes their profile the messages you received from them and sent to them delete too.

Think it was to stop people that would create a profile, send an abusive message to someone then delete their account.

Yes, if they delete their account all messages go too. They can't be retrieved
