How do I add a status update?

I see a little bit of great text, updates, on many profiles. I can’t seem to find his I do this?

Home page and update status.. you wont see it on the local and friends updates but other locals and friends will see it on their updates

if you look at ypur own profile, you can send yourself a friend request and then go back to your profile and accept it, tjen you can see everything you post on the wall
