i have just made a profile with a FB friend of mine but cannot get past the photo verification stage i have submitted the photo and it says within an hour you will be up and running but nothing is happening

Go to 'My Account' page and then the link for 'Manage Photos'.

You should be able to see in your gallery whether or not it has been rejected for some reason
