I want to hide my main pic and just have a blank pic. Is there a way of doing that without deleting the photo from the site. I thought putting it in private would do it,but it appears not.

Your avatar pic will show at the top, there is a remove profile photo button.

There is a pop up which will say that the pic will be permanently deleted, but it isn't deleted from your gallery.
