Numbers on new mailbox

The new mailbox which groups conversations with an individual is a huge improvement. However when I look at the list of conversations, on the right of each above the delete (bin) button there is a number. Does anyone know the significance of this number? I guessed it might be the number of exchanged messages in the conversation but it doesn't seem to be.
