Disappearing messages?

Can messages randomly disappear from your inbox? Or can a sender delete something they’ve sent? Totally confused as last night we had more messages than this morning....

The site can delete old messages after a time to free up server space or if the person left their messages can disappear to

We've found that it can vary by 2 or 3 on occasions and sometimes the mobile app can indicate a different amount of messages than the desktop app - no big deal tbh
