I had messages unread in my sent box then all of a sudden, they have disappeared? Is there a time limit on that over a certain age, they are deleted?

Is the profile you sent the message to still on site?

When a profile is deleted, messages to and from that profile are deleted as well.

not sure about my own sent ones but i know the site deletes ones sent to me within a few days. makes sense they would disappear from the senders sent box also quite quickly.
