the good lands, the bad lands, the any where you may want me lands

OK guys this may be a bit of a stupid question, but humour me, it is completely serious. I don't use a webcam as I'm blind and it isn't anyuse to me. Can I still use the chat rooms just to chat? or is it all via webcam or microphone? I would really like to chat on here but not using webcam or microphone.

Is anyone able to give me a step by step lesson on how to use the chat without a webcam or microphone?

Excellent! thanks for your response, just need to have someone help me navigate the chat room interface, as I don't use a monitor either, I need to understand the buttons I need to use and so on. The users guide for dummies is what I need

You're very welcome inthe caht rooms, tactile, and there is no need to use a webcam or microphone.

The thing is.... only someone who understands your own problem will be able to help you..... for example, if you don't use a monitor, how are you reading this?

Good luck, and I hope it all works out for you!

Thanks Sunny, you're right, but at least I now know that web cams and microphones aren't obligatory. Just need to get someone to help me with navigating the chat interface. I use a piece of access technology called a screen reader. It reads the text from the screen and conveys it to me via the sound card x

It has to be said, your doing a better job of the forums than the rest of us do!, well done.

I think the best way of learning chat is to have some one with you, as the way it's displayed is the problem, plus that many people are chatting at once I'm sure it would be almost impossible to keep up.

Yeah, the display does appear to cause difficulty for my access technology, people have been very helpful. but I think I need someone to take a look and actually see how the chat interface displays in relation to my technology - oo, there's a meet with a difference Yeah. should I get it mastered keeping on top of the multiple conversations could be a problem too, I was hoping it could work like multiple conversations on msn messenger if you chat with people in a quiet room.

If you could get chatting during the quieter times then I'm sure it's do able. Stay clear of directing rooms and probably general room as they are quite busy at most times, at least till you can get used to it.

"like any other chat room, you dont need a cam just click on room and type hun xx"

I think his problem isn't so much what HE says, it's understanding what others say back to him. I can imagine that a 'text to speech' conversion problem would just explode, when General Chat is busy.

I think the poster above, who recommended using one of the quieter rooms, is quite right - a good way for the OP to work out if his 'text to speech' converstion can cope with Fab.

Good luck, OP!

Thanks Sunny, and everyone else, you guys have been very understanding and some really useful suggestions. I need to experiment in a quieter chat room once I have mastered the chat interface, so watch out some time in the future that may be the Tactile feeling his way around lol

If no one has guided you around the chat page, here is a breif guide, may help you... if I make sense that is.

Here goes:

Once you load chat you get a new page or tab opening. At this point, no room has been selected, so the main chat area hasnt yet loaded.

I would seperate the page into three main areas.

1. At the bottom of the screen, is the web cam screen, where other peoples cams are watched. Up to 4 can be viewed if your a site supporter. This area extends from the bottom left and extends to almost the right hand hand side.

2. On the right hand side at the top, is section that shows your cam if switched on and controls if the cam is on or off and the audio is on or off. Note the audio is set as on by default if you switch your cam on. So either click stop audio or disconnect your microphone. Below this is the room list, it lists all the rooms and the number of people in those rooms. There is a scroll on this if your using a smaller screen. In the middle of these two parts is a drop down box that sets private messages to off, on or friends only.

These areas extend from the top right, all the way down the right side of the screen.

3. The area left, that is currently blank is where the chat box goes. Once a room is selected it appears in this area but by default is quite small. You can either click once on the maximise button at the top of this box or drag the corners to resize as you would a standard windows box.

Once this is a suitable size, there are three areas in this window.

1. On the right is the list of user names in that room. It gives their username and their sex. It also gives options under each name to PM (private message) or Block (blocks their text appearing and they cant email you etc) or to Poke. The poke is like a 'buzz' and i guess is used to get peoples attention if their sound is on.

2. On the left is where the chat appears, the user name is listed followed by that persons chat. The username is clickable to get to their profile.

3. Underneath both areas is where you type your chat, there is no send button, the return key on your keyboard sends each line. To the very left of this is a icon for changing font colour and type etc.

Personally, I would ensure you turn off PM's or at least set to pals only, as they way they are implemented just now isnt ideal and they get 'lost' behind main chat window sometimes and could be difficult to recover.

I hope this helps and you have fun.

Steve
