Pics when profile is deleted

I am just wondering what happens to people's pics when they delete their profile?

Do they go completely after they send a message with a pic attached?

You know that once anything is put on the internet that it is there in one form or another forever.

Say you uploaded it to facebook but deleted it 5 minutes late and no-one has shared it, the data is still stored somewhere.

Yes the picture disappears from with in the message, although they could have saved it to there system.
