Disappearing messages

I was recently sent a couple of messages by someone but when I looked for the read and sent messages the following day they had disappeared. I've noticed in the past that if someone has left site it says so but the message is still visible.

But this time the message has completely gone.

Does anyone know how this happened?

Admin have said recently that "user no longer on site" messages are sometimes deleted too now.
