Why are some people names on friends lists greyed out and others are not?

I often wonder that but never thought to ask

LOL Yes.

I mean some of their friends names are greyed out and no, I havent looked at them.

I was just wondering why some of their friends are in bold and others are grey.

Correct... Fabio is spot on. It's a feature of your browser ( we would guess Firefox ). On any webpage, Firefox uses a paler colour for links that you have previously visited, based on your browser history. We think, but not 100% sure, that on Explorer it is blue or red text that indicates the same. If you never clear your history, they will remember a visit from over a year ago, and change the colour of the link. It is not the site doing it, it is your web browser.

Actually the colours can and often are determined by the website these days.

In the case of Fabs, dark grey means you've not visited the profile or not visited it since there has been a major change (such as profile name or a large change to the profile content).

Clearing your browser history can reset this as well, but any major change to the profile will flag the profile as "new content" and your browser will reset the color to the default Link colour as opposed to Visited Link colour (light grey here).

Think greyed out means two things, you have either viewed profile at some point, or if in chat room, you blocked or they blocked you
