Pale / light coloured text

Does it mean anything if i log in and the 'unread messages' and 'friends invites' words are in a light / pale / faded colour?

It means you have clicked on that link previously and not cleared your cookies/ temp internet files/ etc. since.

Clear them and the text will go back to being dark until you click on the links again

I worked out it may have been a friend has rejoined as his ID was pale on my message summaries too.

You'll have previously clicked on his ID to open his profile and that's why it was pale too. Clicking any link turns it pale until you clear your cookies, etc.
