profile hidden/contact

Can someone please explain, if one has hidden their profile how is it that members can still message you, send friend request etc., I know you can still see pics but i thought the idea of hiding yr profile for a while was so the messages and f.rs would stop

You don't come up on searches when you hide your profile.

But from this forum post I can click on your profile, I can't see it, but the option to message you and wink you etc is still on the side menu.
