Why do mods close threads after reaching 175?

I was having a debate with another poster.

When I came back to post, the thread had been closed because it had reached 175. The other poster got their view across but I wasn't able to get mine. Do mods ever keep threads open for longer or is it forum rules?

It's not the mods who close it at 175. Its automatic.

You're always free to start a part 2 if it's closed because the thread got too big.

And it tells you on the thread whether it's closed because the "thread got too big" or closed "by moderator"

dont think its mods tht do it, maybe it sis something to do with site rules. Would be good to have longer threads when their fun
