Click "My Account" at the top of the page, or when you go to reply to a message and there is a "Your current status" message at the top left. Click Update it which is highlighted in yellow.

I thought, (could be wrong) that status updates were for site supporters.

So if you dont support the site, you cant do status updates or looked at me and what not

Nope, anyone can post a status update. On non-site supporters, it's on the right hand side of the screen.
