Hi, I just had some numpty argue with me int he chat room that "Its a public site, any information put there is for public use" so he's basically downloaded my pics and sent them to "his friend".

Apart from the fact that I feel he's chatting drivel (he doesn't have any pics up claimin he's the smart one - hence I'm stupid but he'll happily use my pcis) I feel the site should have some watermark/block feature so you cant just download anyone's pics.

I've seen this done on othersites. Soem may say "but the pictures are marked at the bottom". This does nothing, a simple crop will get rid of the bottom and hence leave the puics re-usable, but something diagonally across the middle of the pic? Some "no-right-click" javascripting? Soem software? I know this can be done.

PS: I sent a ticket in to report the guy - yet he had the gault o block me after downloading my pics. No doubt he will download soemone else's pics and block them also, so they dont see his profile and challenge him once he;s used the pics.

What an idiot he is, but I also thought that pics on the site couldn't be used by any one else, it's a bit worrying that they can be picked up so easliy. Can admin confirm if that's the case? Z

If you don't want anything about you transmitted via the internet - don't put it on the internet in the 1st place, otherwise it's in the public domain ....

No maybe the guy wasn't quite the numpty you thought he was ..

Okay, I get the reason why "right-click" protect doesn't work. But the watermark can be better - I can easily grab my pic and crop out the bottom watermark.

Same happened to us a while ago,it was a single guy using my pics,when we emailed him asking him to take our pics of he had cheek to block us too,as soom as we reported him his profile was took off.

How sad that another guy has to "steal" someone elses pics.

You can put your own watermarks on your pics before downloading them but being a technophobe I can't remember how you do it

There is a no right click feature on this site, it only works in IE though and most people use firefox or chrome.

put your own watermark on them before uploading using paint or similar.

Not quite correct, you cannot right click and "save picture as" with profile pictures but you can with the one you use as your public profile pic or avatar, try it and see

On the site we were on before,you had a choice of positioning your site "watermark".

Either diagonal,straight across the middle or across the bottom.

This might be a good idea for those who are bothered,it'd maybe be nice to have the choice.

You can use any paintshop programme to add your own watermark.

Windows have one for you to use that should be on everyones PC.

Watermarking is like a padlock on a shed door - the padlock only prevents honest people from getting into your shed. Dishonest people will break the lock.

The same goes for watermarking, although I don't deny that it's a bloody good deterent, if you know your way around Photoshop a watermark can be removed very easily, so if someone is Hellbent on using your photo they will do so.

The simplest security measure, as has been said many times before - If you don't want to run the risk of it being abused - don't put it on the internet

That hits the nail firmly on the head but it still will not stop folk questioning why we or others don't put up face pics

I was referring to the "most people use firefox or chrome". That's waht I'm not convinced about.

Why don't you right-click protect our photos to stop others stealing / saving them?

We believe in being straighforward with the members of Fab. Right click protect doesn't work and gives a false sense of security by pretending to "protect" images. Other sites may pretend they've protected your images but actually they're being dishonest by claiming that.

Right click "protect" can be gotten around in under 2 seconds by any of the following methods:

Simplest: Goto File menu, Save As, and save to desktop = The photos will be in a folder on your desktop that your browser has created.

OR... Disable JavaScript by going to Tools menu, choose Internet Options, Click the Security tab, click Custom Level, scroll to the "Scripting" section of the list and click Disable. Right click can now be used to save images.

OR... Press print screen and the image + page will be copied to clipboard where it can be pasted into a graphics program for resize or save.

We give you three privacy options on your photos and we now hide images from anyone who isn't a member of Fab. If you are worried about someone stealing your photos you may want to set them to be viewable only by your friends, or private in which case you can send by private mail.

We also now watermark all photos upon upload.

Right click also doesn't work for another reason! When you request a webpage the whole page is downloaded to you computer and this includes any pics etc. So all you need to is look at your temp files and the pics are there to save.

Like people have said it is difficult to stop people using your pics, even if they do how are you going to know unless they tell you, if you do find some on the internet how will you know who has used them, finally if you do find someone has used them do you really fancy taking them court for copyright? and don't forget they could be anywhere in the world!

Golden rule on internet don't upload anything you don't want others to see!!

Thankfully my pic has my face in it (int he fortunate position that I'm not afraid to show mine) .. if he wants to crop the face out and say its him, good luck to him. He'll be caught out, then all his "experienced and genuine" will come unravelling fast!

Which is what I'm aiming for, makes them unusable by anyone else unless he wants to go through the effort of trying to prove "I'm the real Ahabs - not that other guy you've all known for years".

Never said it would stop people downloading images, it was to help stop others using them as their own, and yes some people that are good with photoshop etc could remove the watermark, but not all people are, and if they were that good with it they wouldn’t need to use anyone else’s pictures anyway.

Only real option is to watermark and/or obscure identifying features or withhold pictures until you trust someone.

All pictures can be lifted even from "secure" sites. Anything viewed in any browser (IE,Firefox or chrome to name a few) has to be downloaded to your hard drive and so is findable on your computer.

A free alternative to paintshop would be GIMP (as in Graphics Image Manipulation Program, not the other gimps) Try gooogle it.

Thanks for raising this issue as we thought that all our pics were secure on this site - well they seemed to be up to a while ago!!!

Thanks for the link to the watermarking software too - we have downloaded it and all our pics are now marked - we have also told all on our friends list too.

Funny, we had a mail from a single guy the other night asking if we were genuine as he had seen a single females profile that had some of the same pics as ours!!! Creep!!!!

some clown asked me if my pics were fake.. i think if i was stealin pics i would steal ones of a wee skinny thing lol!! there been a few posts recently about stolen pics if u come across any report them xx

There is a difference between "in the public domain" and free to use...

But you will have to make a case and get damages etc...

The easiest way is to tell the web site host that someone is using your pics/work etc and they must do something about it as they now know...

The normal defence is that they can't monitor everything on their site and rely on people to report things...

And the problem with that is that once pics have been stolen the copyright owner has no idea where they've been posted so isn't actually able to tell the webhosts to take them down.

If you don't want to risk having your pics everywhere - don't put them anywhere.

I think a good plan would be not to put any pics that you wouldnt want stolen in your public gallery and only have people in ya pals list that you trust......or...... if you like having lots of people in ya pals list so you can perv their pics, leave ya face pics to been totally private and mail them individually when asked for etc.

If governments and large companies can stop things been stolen from their computers/online then a swinging website has no chance. So, if you dont want ya pics stolen, dont post them!

It is hard to lock content from being stolen or kept.

I have a site where I have to consider the same risks, so have gone to many lengths to protect users from everyday picture collectors (as such I know most of the ways to grab pictures and content too!!)

Even protecting right clicks, cache storage, hotlinking etc will not protect a determined user.

Once they can see it on their screen, there is no way to prevent them from grabbing it, no matter what the site owner tries or claims.

Watermarking is again an ok way to the everyday collector or profile copier, but with little effort a watermark can be removed to a point that will fool most viewers.

At the end of the day, only upload images that you want to be seen, then you control the risk.
