Apologies if this is covered elsewhere.

If we message someone and we are outside their desired age range (even if only 1 year for one of us) do they get to see the message at all? We’ve similarly experienced not being able to verify someone outside our age range but wondered if the same applies to messages ?

Yes they do. If they'd set filters to exclude your age you wouldn't be able to message them at all
