If i block a specific gender from messaging,does that also cover someone that I've have chatted too or will i have to add them as a friend for them to avoid the whole block ?

Your answer is at the bottom of the page with filter settings.

Filters don't apply and people can message if you've mailed someone before (if you message someone you have filtered, they can reply), you have winked at someone, or you are friends.
