Deleted messages not deleting

May have been asked before but can current system of deleted messages not being deleted be put back to how it was.

Gigantic error in my opinion and personally i like personal messages to go once read

I prefer it the way it is, at least I can see what other people have sent if they message me again after a while of not speaking.
