Messages arent sending

When i message someone my messages dont send, then when i send another message, the first one says sent. The new message shows as not read until i send another message. But the person i am sending too hasnt actually recieved my message. I know this as ive sent messages to a friend and shes whatsapp me back saying she hasnt recieved any.
