Have switched between old and new look mailbox to see if we can locate this rogue unread message but we keep on seeing a stubborn "1 unread" notification.

How can we get rid of it?

Are there a lot of messages in yoru inbox generally?

It could be that the unread one is one "page 2", whcih is inaccessible - if you deleted a couple of the threads on the main page, the entries from lower down may become accessible again.
