some people are adding to threads from years ago as they think they are current. It would be more logical, and sensible, if threads over 6 months old were locked from new comments.

They are not shut as a matter of course no, most of them are never bumped up anyway.

Why do you assume people don't know they aren't current?

People maybe use the forum search facility to find if a topic they're interested in has been posted and comment on it.

Just because you personally don't want to reply or comment on threads 6 months or older, doesn't mean everyone is of the same mindset.

I love browsing old posts and then finding more recent posts of the same subject to see how people's views have changed ( or not ) over time.
