Is the distance listed on a profile I was chatting to someone I know is over 30 miles away and it showed 15 to 20 and they said they’d not left home that day

Its as the crow flies. Margate shows as 20 miles from me, which it is, if you can swim across the Estuary. If you drive its closer to 90 miles.

My Own Little World

Their phone may not have refreshed their location but shows the last place they had it switched on, possibly days earlier. So don't use the miles on the profile as an accurate distance, you think someone hasn't left their home but they are telling you they are 5 mins away, because they can very easily be telling the truth.
