"Have driven in France many times in both left & right hand drive cars and wouldn’t expect you to have any problems generally. Also rented many times & whilst I haven’t really had any issues on return with the rental companies, have had several issues with genuine damage to the car in car parks etc. So definitely would suggest insuring the excess is wise. This can easily be another €20 a day - or a much better way is to get an annual travel insurance policy that automatically covers it or in the past you could get it for free with some credit cards (although the latter was in Switzerland and admittedly might not be available in the U.K.......)" Hi. Thanks for the advice. I used to buy annual cover in the UK. However the car hire company still swipe your card for the excess. Last time I declined the hirers cover they then tried to claim that there were a variety of exclusion clauses on my policy.

It seems, as long as some one else is liable to pay, they will try to horse it on. As a result, I always buy the renters insurance...cheaper in the long run, and less hassle

"I've hired in France, Germany, Italy, Spain lots of times, 3 so far this year. With the exception of Italy I've found the roads and drivers to be every but as good as the UK and in the case of Fr and Ger the roads are better. Take out your own excess insurance as its much cheaper and don't listen to any of the crap that the sales rep tells you. If you can hire an automatic that's even easier, but just remember that there are tolls to pay and sometimes you have to but a tag to drive in different countries. Good luck and don't be frightened, it's really straightforward " Spot on!
