Have heard a rumour that the speed limit is changing in France this summer. Is it true

Bergerac, France

If you google 'speed limit changes in France' you'll get all the details...

Only one is changing and that's on single carriageway roads.

At present it's 90kmh but it will change on the 1st July to 80kmh.

Haven't read anything about caravan towing changes, think they are remaining as they are.

But this is France, so they have until the 30th June to change their minds....!

A good way to raise some cash lol. The French driver like racing drivers (which is partly due to the reduction in the limit), but they ignore it anyway. Just remember if you are 2kph over you will get a fine - no 10% rule here!

Absolutely right, have been fined for doing 84 on an 80 section of the A75 motorway.

Have stacked up 9 penalty points in last 18 months here in France whilst only 3 in 30 years UK driving.

ooh I thought I was doing biad lol. Fortunately I have only been caught 3 times and only lost 1 point each time and got them back after 6 months - but I have a French license.

To be fair, we got 3 of the points for not displaying our Insurance on our windscreen, we didn’t know, just thought you had to keep your documents with you whilst you drive.

We have a French car but have kept our English licence so not sure if those points are yet transferred. Will wait until we are 70 to switch to a French licence since the French don’t have an upper limit, hopefully will have sussed out where all the speed cameras are by then!

I think I've posted this before but I've had 2 speeding tickets in France and both times the 10% rule applied.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it is something to do with the agreement between France and Germany (I have a German licence and the car is on German plates) for passing information.

In Germany you get the 10% rule and the Germans wont pass a ticket on unless the French agree to apply it.

That is what I'm led to believe and both times it has worked for me and saved quite a lot in fine reduction.

Also I know I've been flashed a couple of times and never seen a ticket, so maybe the 10% rule just put me under.

Seems like one law for the French and another for everyone else.

Evidemment!

You have French rates and everybody else rates, just try to get some building work done and then look at the quotes!

UK licences will have to be changed after brexit you will be allowed to drive on an International Driving Permit but only for a year, after that you will need to sit a French driving test as a permanent resident. Best change now.

Unfortunately tax is high here hence so is the work. I pay 23% NI on everything then tax on 50% of my turnover - not cheap!

Got to agree - French drivers are as a whole very poor. Too fast, too impatient and ignore any highway code!

The new speed limits will do little to reduce accidents!

The French motoring forums have been complaining about this law for ages.

They argue that it will cause more deaths because some drivers will overtake cars that are 'only doing 80 kph' and so create more collisions....!!

With that logic, things will never change..

On the postive side it will probably increase the sales of the "sans permis" cars with a 50kph limit it will eventually slow everybody down ?

Can you imagine it...?

A line of sans permis all jockeying for position, ready for the overtake.

Sounds like a Monty Python sketch...!

My daughter is a very nervous driver and sticks religiously to speed limits, Last year we drove along the 'corniche' in Sete, a distance about 4k, you can imagine the queue of cars as she carefully navigated at 25-30 kph. The insults and gestures that were thrown at us when they finally managed to pass was typically french and quite amusing.

As from 26th April this year private speed enforcement cars will be operating in France. These are umarked cars which have a contract with the government to photograph speeding cars. The first area to have them is Normandy but by mid 2019 the whole country will have them.

They are everywhere here in the 50... setting up in places that the gendarmes must consider as dangerous... worst I’ve seen so far is clocking on coming cars whilst parked indicating to cross a dual carriage way! I’m told they are making a fortune! No leeway, if you are over you done
